I love it when a book’s cover accurately convey’s the “feel” of the story inside, and this is absolutely true for Clea Simon’s Blackie and care cat mystery series. cross My path is the third book in the series featuring Blackie the cat and his human Care, a young private detective.

Written in the voice of Blackie, a black cat with a mysterious past, set in an unnamed city with a post-apocalyptic feel, this series combines elements of fantasy and mystery.

Care’s track record as a private investigator is growing and clients are beating a path to her door. An elderly woman seeks her help in finding out what happened to her brother. Blackie senses he’s met this woman before, some time before he became a cat. but who is she – and what is their connection?

At the same time, a dockworker asks care to find a colleague who’s gone missing. but how come a poor labourer has the funds to pay for Care’s services?

If you’ve read The conscious cat for any length of time, you know I’m a substantial fan of Clea Simon’s work. I adore her relaxing mysteries, but I still haven’t quite made pals with this series. I like my reading on the lighter side, and the setting of this grimy city filled with people who are struggling to survive is just too dark and depressing for my taste.

However, I absolutely love Clea’s brilliant, highly descriptive writing style. Her words paint a brilliant picture of the city’s dark corners and the despair of lots of of its inhabitants. Additionally, writing in a cat’s voice is not something lots of writers do well without descending into the realm of cute (not that there’s anything wrong with that!) Simon manages to write from Blackie’s point of view in a way that not only reflects a extensive understanding of feline behavior, but also a connection to the feline essence.

If you take pleasure in dark mysteries or apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction with an element of fantasy, you will take pleasure in this book. cross My path can be read as a standalone, but why not take pleasure in the entire series?
