Walk your pet dog 101 miles (day 24)

I don’t run without a leash in my hands, a pet dog at my side. lots of runners do not own dogs. other runners have dogs and they don’t bring them along on runs. Either their dogs are “too small” (although I’m sure they could still keep up) or their dogs are too crazy and pull too much (hmmm, wouldn’t that be a reason to run more?). Others say it’s too hot or too cold for a dog.

I chose a pet dog based on its running potential. I wanted a pet dog at least 40 pounds or so, an athletic dog, a young dog, a pet dog with long legs. I couldn’t have found a better running buddy. My mutt Ace’s only problem is his sleek, black coat and lean body. He can overheat in the summer and has very little insulation in the winter.

Ace and I went on a 10-mile run yesterday morning, early enough so the mutt and I would not get too hot. It got up to 80 degrees! but today it’s back in the 30s …

Running 10 miles is a lot more mentally challenging than physically challenging. When I’m at mile 9 with stiff knees, a bum ankle, the wind against me and a worn out dog, my mental strength is what figures out whether I run or walk the last mile.

I’ve done enough long runs to know that I can’t make it through unless I’m mentally having a good day. That’s why I plan my long runs very carefully. I pick sunny days, very carefully pre-planning routes with new paths and some grassy areas where the mutt can be off leash. I also tell myself I can go as slow as I want, as long as I complete the run. That seems to do the trick.

How do you motivate yourself for longer runs and walks?

How to Make brushing Your Dog’s Teeth A practice

cleaning our dog’s teeth. we all know it’s important. but for some of us, it’s something that seems hard to do regularly.

One of my new Year’s resolutions was to do a better job of taking care of Baxter’s teeth. Now, it’s time for me to report on how I’m doing.

The answer?

Not great.

Argh.

I have brushes and paste and chews and rinses. I have a relatively cooperative dog. I had a few nights in a row where I brushed his teeth best after dinner. but then I stopped.

I’ve chose that what I need is a habit.

I’ve heard it takes something like three weeks to establish a new habit.

I also know that goal setting isn’t enough on its own. I need a plan. So here is my plan to establish our new dental cleaning practice over the next three weeks.

How to make brushing your dog’s teeth a habit

Timing

I liked brushing teeth after dinner. We weren’t pressed for time, Baxter was pretty relaxed, my husband was home so we could label team if we needed to. but then Baxter started going to bed before we finished eating. He ate his dinner, did a lap around the kitchen to make sure we hadn’t dropped anything and walked down the hall to the bedroom.

Getting him up or getting down on the floor to brush his teeth while he’s laying in bed are not ideal scenarios.

New plan: brush teeth in the morning.

Equipment

Mr. B has much more brushes, flavours of toothpaste, sprays and rinses than I do. The regular toothbrush is easiest to maneuver around his mouth instead of the finger brush, and he seems alright with the taste of the canine toothpaste.

However, he has some tartar buildup on his teeth that’s too hard for the brush.

New plan: add a tartar-softening rinse to his drinking water and find a scraper to try to remove the tartar.

Extra help

The comments on my last post and my own experience with Baxter confirm the most significant help for clean teeth is raw bones. We don’t feed raw (yet), so once a week we try to give Baxter a soup bone to chomp on.

The issues are we’re not consistent with every week, and I choose he have the bones outside where he can lie down and chew for an hour or more. When he’s inside—like in the winter—he brings the bones to his bed. Yuck.

New plan: I’m not sure what I’m going to do here. Honestly, I may wait until the weather warms up to officially add bones to our routine. spring is less than a month away now.

What else ought to I consider in my tooth cleaning plan?

How to stop a new pet dog from marking in the house

Do any of you have dogs that try to mark in the house?

How did you stop or stop the behavior?

I just about died when my parents told me my pet dog Ace had peed on their indoor plant. It’s funny to think about it now, but at the time it wasn’t funny!

Since then I’ve been extra cautious when bringing my pet dog into other people’s homes. He stays on the leash or near me so I can supervise.

Indoor marking is a fairly common problem with dogs, and it’s one of those discouraging behaviors that might cause someone to surrender his or her dog.

So, I’m hoping we could all share a few ideas to help each other out.

Sometimes new pet dog owners are unaware that marking can be a problem, especially on the first day home when everything is new to the dog. The new owners may be shocked when the “potty trained” rescue pet dog pees all over the cat’s scratching post (yep, seen that happen a few times).

As with all training topics, I’d love to hear your thoughts. here are some of mine:

Tips to stop a pet dog from marking in the house

1. lots of supervision.

When I bring a new pet dog into my home, I keep the pet dog on a 6-foot leash and near me in any way times. I do this even if I’ve been told the pet dog is housebroken.

A pet dog that is potty trained could still attempt to mark in a new indoor area. marking is not the same thing as having an “accident.” I’ve also learned from experience that just because a pet dog is potty trained in one home does not necessarily indicate he knows what to do in another home.

If I can’t supervise, then the pet dog stays in a kennel or at least in a smaller part of the house such as a shower room or laundry room.

After some severe supervision and prevention for a day or two (sometimes much longer), I would give the pet dog a lot more freedom.

2. block the behavior.

I do everything I can to stop or stop the pet dog from marking. Ideally, I will redirect his attention by calling his name or asking him to sit well before he has a chance to mark, but if it’s a close call I will break out my a lot more severe tone and say “Hey!” or “No!”

This of course must be followed by praise for an proper behavior such as sitting.

Keep an extra eye on your pet dog around cat scratching posts, the ends of the couch and spots where other dogs have had accidents in the past.

3. use a pet dog stomach band (male wrap).

A stomach band fits around a male dog’s belly, covering his man parts so if he does mark it will go onto the stomach band instead of onto your furniture. It’s kind of like a diaper, only it’s created to catch small amounts of urine. The ones I’ve used were washable and reusable.

A stomach band does not train the pet dog to stop marking, but it’s a valuable tool to have while he’s learning. kid was this a life saver when I had certain foster dogs!

Female dogs can also mark in the house, by the way. If it’s a real problem with your lady dog, you could try using a doggy diaper for the time being. just take it off her when you take her outside to go potty.

4. keep checking out new areas.

Once the pet dog seems to have stopped marking in your home, it’s a good idea to keep bringing him to new areas so he can learn proper behavior in other situations.

You’ll need to supervise him very closely, of course. Be ready to right him or redirect his attention. carrying treats and asking the pet dog to sit or “watch” is a good way to keep his attention on you rather than sniffing and potentially marking your friend’s couch.

Pet stores are good places to practice this, considering that there are lots of tempting pet dog smells. You could also try checking out a tolerant friend’s house.

5. keep on satisfying good behavior.

When your pet dog relieves himself or marks outside, tell him he’s a good dog. often we forget to reward the basic behavior, but it’s really important.

There are certain outdoor objects I don’t want my pet dog to pee on such as park benches, so I make sure to re-direct his attention around them and reward him for peeing on the bushes or trees. He is nearly 8 years old and the training never ends.

Finally, what do you people think about spaying and neutering?

I know the majority of readers are in support of spaying and neutering a lot of pet dogs. but does it actually help stop unwanted behaviors such as marking?

In my limited experience with unaltered dogs (male and female), I have observed that these dogs were a lot more likely to mark in my house.

This does not verify anything. It’s just my limited observation – I’m talking about four or five unaltered dogs total compared to about 50 altered dogs. I also know a few owners who have unaltered dogs, and they say they have absolutely no issues with their dogs marking in the house.

I’m sure it mostly depends on the amount of training the owner is ready to put into the dog, regardless of whether or not the pet dog has been “fixed.”

What are your thoughts?

I hope you’ll jump in and share your experience.

*Can I just add that my pet dog did not lift his leg once for the first two years I had him? Not once. He was a squatter. He started lifting his leg when he was about 3 or 4.

Awkward, funny pet sitting stories

Pet sitters see a great deal of odd things.

If you’re a pet sitter, you understand what I’m speaking about!

Sooner or later, you’re bound to walk in on something awkward. You’ll also deal with clients who have some odd requests for their animals.

Plus, you just never know what the dogs as well as cats themselves will do!

I’d truly like to hear your funny, odd or uncomfortable pet sitting stories in the comments. I understand you have them!

The complying with are a couple examples some pet sitters showed me.

When an additional pet just shows up in the house

Crystal Stemberger of Crystal’s relaxing care was hired to inspect on two cats after their normal home sitter fell through.

“I didn’t get to satisfy the cats in advance,” she said. “It was a last-minute hire.”

On her very first visit, she stated she saw a “streak of black as well as white” run past her with the feline door as well as a “fat, happy, gray feline waiting to be fed.”

She filled up their bowls, cleaned their litter boxes as well as went on her way. The next day, she didn’t even see the black-and-white cat, just the gray one.

Then, on the third day, there was the gray feline together with an orange feline waiting by the food dishes.

“At this point, I was extremely confused as well as texted the owners,” Stemberger said.

She asked, “You have two cats, right?”

The owners stated yes, they had a gray feline as well as a black as well as white cat.

“So who is this small, orange tabby?” Stemberger asked.

The owners responded, “We don’t understand that one! Please get it out of our house!”

Stemberger eliminated the orange feline a lot more than once, however he kept coming back.

Eventually, the household ended up adopting the orange tabby.

“His persistence as well as wonderful temperament won them over,” she said. “His new name is Crasher as in ‘party crasher’ considering that ‘free meal’ didn’t roll off the tongue.”

You’ve seen everything if you’re a pet sitter

Katie is the co-owner of a pet sitting service as well as stated she as well as her service partners have seen sufficient to compose a book. (She asked me not to utilize her genuine name).

For example, one of her clients insists the pet sitters speak to her plants to make sure they are “happy as well as content,” Katie said. “And we requirement to step them to a new place if we sense they are depressed.”

This client has a nanny cam to make sure whatever occurs precisely as she wants it, according to Katie.

But that may be nothing compared to a specific longtime, midday client.

This client was going with a divorce from his wife, Katie said. A pet dog walker would go to his home everyday at the exact same time, Monday with Friday.

“One day she walks in, as well as he is in his boxers as well as nothing else as well as he is enjoying porn on his laptop,” she said. “And he acts totally shocked to see her. Really?”

‘Special’ diets

Many of you understand I am a pet sitter with my service Run That Mutt.

A couple of years back I shown up at a new client’s apartment. I observed a strong odor before I even got to her door. She was the owner of two Yorkie mixes.

The dogs just keep getting sick, she explained.

Then she went over their schedule, describing that they were not housebroken yet as well as that I must expect them to poop in the apartment. (She’d had them a year.)

For their meals, she instructed me to provide them Kentucky Fried poultry twice a day as well as showed me the red, family-sized bucket. I likewise observed a plate of dried up Kraft mac as well as cheese on the floor, untouched.

Please provide them bottled water, she said. The tap water is just “too difficult on their bit systems.”

Getting locked out of the house

Jess Harris was pet sitting one of her regulars, a shiba inu named Teddy.

Teddy might be a bit destructive if enabled to roam in the home alone, Harris said. One morning, Harris inadvertently locked herself out of the home (a pet sitter’s worst nightmare, right?!).

As she sat at the front door waiting on somebody from the business to find with the spare key, she realized Teddy was alone doing who understands what to the house.

“Frantically trying to figure out a method to distract him, I let out a bark with the front door,” she said. “He ran to the front door, barking at the ‘dog’ on the other side.”

She stated she kept barking at him to keep him distracted from destroying the house!

“It worked like a charm, however people walking by most likely believed it rather odd to see some random woman at their neighbor’s front door, barking at her dog!”

Unwanted gifts

Brooke increased was pet dog sitting a friend’s pet dog named Huck, as well as she stated Huck showed up on the back deck with a “detached” deer leg in his mouth.

“I have no concept if the golden retriever ripped the leg off a carcass himself or just discovered the leg, however I was at a overall loss of what to do,” she said.

In Tahoe, it’s not strange to discover a deer carcass right here as well as there, according to Rose.

I have to say, I’ve never had that experience with Run That Mutt!

Dog Training: What are you working on today?

What are you working on with your dogs ideal now?

There’s always something, because as you know, training never really ends.

Some new pet dog owners seem to be under the impression that training ends after the pet dog passes beginning obedience classes or after the pet dog completes six sessions with a personal trainer.

But pet dog training never ends.

I have taken my pet dog to obedience classes for at least one session a year for the last seven years. We’ve repeated the “novice” obedience class about five times. It’s not because we’ve failed the class. It’s because there’s always a lot more to learn.

The majority of the pet dog owners in those classes are capable of teaching the class themselves, even if they don’t consider themselves professional pet dog trainers.

Even pet dog trainers area always training their dogs. even pet dog trainers take their dogs to obedience classes.

Not that obedience classes are for everyone or that classes are the only way to train a dog. They’re not.

Almost each day I practice training with my 8-year-old pet dog Ace.

On walks, I reward him for heeling and “watch” for making eye contact.

I walk at different speeds and change directions and reward him for following along. often I run with my dog.

I encourage him to stand on different surfaces and obstacles like park benches and to climb up low trees.

I show him new tricks like “get your leash” and “catch!”

I’m always taking Ace to new places and events like different coffee shops.

I’m always introducing him to different dogs so he can maintain his social skills.

[/check_list]

I don’t know how lots of thousands of hours I’ve spent training my dog, but it’s never something that ends just because he’s reached a certain age or because he’s mastered a certain number of commands.

With dogs, there’s always another challenge. It’s one of the things I love about dogs.

There’s always a goal. always a reward. always a lot more to learn.

Why exercising My pet dog is a lot more crucial Than training

expert pet dog fitness instructors tell me it’s a lot more crucial to tire out my pet dog mentally vs. physically.

More than one told me my weimaraner Remy should only need 20 to 30 minutes of exercise a day (Ha! great one!), as well as that I must focus on technique training, impulse manage as well as puzzle toys.

These are all excellent suggestions, but I put physical exercise very first for a lot of dogs. particularly a high-drive, working pet dog like Remy.

Remy is a pet, however he comes from a line of dogs bred for serious hunting as well as endurance.

So as soon as we get up in the morning, we walk.

And a number of times per week we either run, head to the pet dog park or hike. We work on obedience training regularly, however we walk every single day no matter what.

Training as well as policies as well as impulse manage as well as socialization are important, however exercise makes the most difference for the largest portion of dogs.

When I utilized to volunteer to take shelter dogs to adoption events, I took pleasure in handling the a lot of “challenging” dogs with poor reputations. They were always well behaved for me, not since I’m an remarkable trainer however since I took them running ideal before the event!

These dogs showed no indication of obedience skills, however they might behave in public just since they’d had a possibility to shed off some anxiety as well as energy. I don’t indicate running them to exhaustion, I indicate just running with them for 30 minutes.

When we lived in San Diego, I took Remy to the country for the 4th of July. I got to see my exercise approach in action.

We spent a week with household on their ranch as well as camping in the mountains. Remy got to be off leash the majority of the time. We hiked for 10 miles, as well as he got to run as well as play with other dogs. Simply, he got to be a pet dog without the limitations of our normal (at the time) city life.

Once you eliminate all the additional energy from my dog, he’s a different guy. Calm. Easygoing. Doesn’t nip, jump or run off.

As a country dog, Remy did not obsessively eat dirt or pieces of trash or try to pick up rocks like he performs in San Diego. He voluntarily took naps outside and even put himself to bed by retreating to his open kennel.

The difference was unbelievable. My dog’s true character lastly got to emerge.

“Yes, I’m a great dog,” he told me. “I want to be with you. I’m not as brave as I pretend. I’m not very assertive. I just don’t understand exactly how to manage my energy.”

Of course, Remy was likewise worn out from satisfying new people as well as dogs plus all of the new sights, smells as well as experiences. He had a great mental workout.

But you might nearly see the energy kick back around him after just one afternoon off leash—freedom to run as he wished, make options as well as just be a weimaraner.

And then we returned to the city with all the limitations of metropolitan life, as well as I looked for methods to continue that flexibility for my dog—more exercise, fewer boundaries.

I even chilled out my rules.

Does it truly matter if my pet dog walks at a tight heel? Not really. Does it matter if he sits completely in front of me when called? Nope.

But will he stick near me as well as not run off? will he pay interest when I state his name? Does he prevent conflict with other dogs? Can he manage himself in new situations?

Perhaps these are the training ideas that matter a lot of no matter where we live.

And believe me, I’m all about training. This entire web site is mainly about pet dog training!

I’m just trying to state that often the option to a issue is a great deal easier than we make it.

Remove the anxiety as well as energy as well as you’ll eliminate the behavioral issues too.

Sometimes it’s a lot more complicated, of course. Often, it’s not.

A tired pet dog may or may not be a great dog, however he’ll have an much easier time being himself.

That’s all I’m ever truly looking for. just letting my dogs be dogs.

Do you have a similar technique to exercise as well as training?

Or do you see it differently?

Let me understand in the comments.

-Lindsay

Update: Since this publish was written, my pet dog Remy has been training for long-distance running. He’s a much happier pet dog now that he’s discovered his true work. He is a great deal like the “country-dog” version of him I described in this post.
