Yeast Infections: causes and treatments

By Jonathan David
December 2, 2019
Yeast infections can creep up at just about anytime it seems. I’ve seen yeast infections develop in a dog’s ears, around toes and pads, around a dog’s a lot more “private areas” and even on a dog’s body!

Yeast infections are a common and aggressive fungal infection often found on our furry clients. but why do dogs get them?

Yeasts are spore–like forms of fungi that, under the ideal conditions, can flourish into infections of the skin or ears. Symptoms usually include itchy, crusty and smelly skin with a yellowish discharge. The yeast spores are frequently present and can live on healthy, normal skin, but a lot of dogs have immune defenses that will keep the spores from proliferating into an infection.

When the spores are in small numbers, it’s easy for a dog’s body to fight, but often the skin surface conditions change, giving the spores an opportunity to proliferate into an infection. This type of yeast infection is called Malassezia Dermatitis.

There can be several situations that can cause a dog’s natural immune defenses to lose the battle against these yeast spores. the most common cause is an increase in skin oils. This creates a moist and oily breeding ground combined with a dog’s body heat which is an exceptional situation for yeast to flourish.

Increased oils can be caused by allergies, dermatological issues or poor quality shampoos that strip the healthy oils from the skin, causing the pet dog to try to overcompensate for the loss of moisture by producing extra oils quickly. Allergies and dermatological conditions can overwork the immune system and cause a action that suppresses the immune system, allowing for the skin to become inflamed and causing overproduction of oil, which is an optimal situation for yeast growth.

Another common area we see yeast is around the toes and nails beds. This type of yeast infection of the foot is called Canine Pododermatitis. The reason that this is a common place for yeast to flourish is because feet are frequently moist and frequently come in contact with yeast spores that are on grass, soil or any surface your pet dog walks on. Symptoms of a yeast infection of the foot can include itching, redness, excessive licking, greasy discharge and occasionally a brown discoloration of the nails. The excessive licking can cause redness and swelling around the nail bed and the moisture from the licking can exasperate the yeast infection. The yellowish discharge normally has a distinct odor and the brown discoloration of the nails is very easy to see on lighter colored nails and often creates a brown crust that can be scraped off.

The third and a lot of common area we see yeast infections in dogs is inside the ear canals and inner ear leathers. in contrast to popular belief, water does not cause yeast infections. The yeast spores have to already be present to start an infection, but the combination of water in the ear canal with the warmth of a dog’s body and the limited air flow to the ear canal all together create a best recipe for a yeast infection to flourish in the ears.

Dropped ears like we see in breeds like Cocker Spaniels, Poodles and Hounds are a lot more prone to yeast infections in the ears because these types of ears fold over and stop good airflow to the ear canal, which would assist in evaporating the moisture.

When yeast infections take a hold within the ear canal, a pet dog may be seen scratching at their ears, rubbing their ears on carpeting or furniture, or tilting and shaking their head in an effort to relive the itching. When they shake their head, the yeast can spread to the inside flap of the ear leather which would cause the skin to become enflamed and crusty, and the ear canal can become red in color. In severe cases, it could swell to the point of closing off the ear canal.

Often when your pet dog is suffering from a yeast infection of the ear and they scratch their ear, the yeast can spread to the nails through contact and eventually the nails can spread that infection to other areas of the body through scratching themselves with an infected nail. Left untreated, a yeast infection will spread over the entire body of the pet dog causing scaly, crusty skin, redness and swelling, foul odors and hair loss.

Treating yeast infections on dogs can be fairly easy if caught early. A veterinarian will diagnose the yeast through visual inspection or a skin scraping. common treatments for cases of the skin include oral antibiotics, topical sprays and medicated shampoos and conditioners that inhibit yeast growth. Yeast infections of the feet are usually treated with oral antibiotics combined with pre–moistened medicated pads that you wipe down the feet and nail beds with several times a day, typically combined with medicated shampoos used to wash the feet daily.

Infections of the ears can be a little harder to treat because of the limited airflow to the ear canals. usually these types of yeast infections are treated with medicated drops applied to the ear canal two to three times a day, and often in conjunction with oral antibiotics. It’s crucial to note that during treatment of yeast infections it is important to keep the areas being treated as dry as possible. This indicates completely drying the skin and hair when applying medicated shampoos and avoiding water within the ear canal during a bath to help speed the recovery process and to avoid a regrowth of the yeast. An ear canal can look better and smell better but can still harbor some of the yeast spores, so it’s encouraged to complete the entire treatment process to ensue complete recovery.

Don’t panic if you discover your pet dog or a client’s pet dog has a yeast infection—it’s not the end of the world—but it is a matter that needs to be dealt with immediately and aggressively. now that you know how to manage the situation, you can say goodbye to yeast and hey there to delighted clients! ✂️

Mentoring: the very best instructors Are trainees

By Michelle Knowles
August 31, 2019
I genuinely owe my occupation to a woman named Phyllis Stansberry. You may not understand who she is, as she didn’t win any type of awards or go to grooming expos…or even understand exactly how to do show dogs. Yet, she is the essential person who started me on the path to where I am today.

Ms. Phyllis had a small, immaculate, four–table shop in Southport, Indiana as well as had developed a solid as well as dependable clientele that had paid for her mortgage, put her two kids with college as well as eventually paid for her retirement. While she was at it, she likewise trained a few of the very best groomers I have ever known, supplying them with a trade as well as keeping them employed up until it was time to step on to their next adventure.

I can keep in mind telling her, after a difficult day of grooming, that this was only a steppingstone for me, as well as I was not going to be grooming forever. She then stated something I will never forget: “Pay interest to what you discover right here as well as to what the dogs are telling you to ensure that you can be gotten ready for whatever comes your way”.

I believed about what she stated for a week, obsessing over what it meant. So, I really started to pay interest to every single thing that she did; exactly how she washed, exactly how she poured her products, exactly how she spoke to her clients, as well as exactly how she engaged the dogs as well as cats that came into the shop.
Advertisements

I was bathing a Husky, one of my very first ever, as well as she told me to make sure that I rinsed it in awesome water so the hair would release. I asked her why this was so, as well as she stated I don’t truly understand however it does. Without either one of us knowing, we both went house as well as researched the subject as well as came up with some answers. awesome water rinses assist to close as well as smooth the cuticle of the hair which assists the loose shafts slide out of the coat easier. We laughed as well as went on about our day.

It always pleased me that she was not terrified to make mistakes, or not understand something, since when I stumped her, she would admit to not understanding however have an response for me as soon as she might discover one. Make no mistake—she had remove expectations of what my tasks were as well as expected me to online as much as her standards—but she never yelled, or blamed, as well as was always prepared to assist if you needed it.

I have numerous people to be grateful for while discovering my trade, lots of of them mentors, a few of them for just a snippet of info that led me to the next question, as well as a big part of them were, as well as still are, students. nobody will test you like a trainee that is hungry for information, soaking up as much as you can provide as well as demanding to understand things you haven’t even believed about yet. lots of times, I have had to tell them that I don’t have an answer, however I make sure as well as discover one if it is offered to find.

Teaching, mentoring as well as apprenticeships have been the backbone of this market for a long time. Back in the day, grooming institutions were few, however the wish to groom animals was strong. I have heard colleagues lament over the truth that assisting novices was as well difficult as well as they like workers with experience. While this is needed for running a business, I understand likewise that in refusing to provide a newbie a try, we may be missing a diamond in the rough.

I have a policy of three: If they show interest, show up in a timely manner as well as provide me their best, I will always continue to provide them a chance. lots of people took possibilities on me as well as I pay off that depend on as lots of times as I can.

The a lot more I teach, the a lot more I learn. There will always be new techniques, new products as well as new styles to try. Being available to the concerns of the trainee will assist you see past your ingrained beliefs as well as routines as well as assist you ended up being a much better instructor for the next group of fresh–faced groomers, excited to absorb whatever grooming–related.

I have lots of to say thanks to on my journey to ending up being a pet professional, however it truly did begin with Ms. Phyllis. as well as I will never fail to remember the crucial things that she taught me; a few of those lessons were just life lessons. Loving to discover as well as being available to modification will open doors you never even understood were there. We are all students; we are all likewise teachers. the very best instructors are likewise students.

So right here I am, on the exact same steppingstone, hoping that I can pass on what I understand before my time is done. say thanks to you, Ms. Phyllis. ✂️

Review: The Karma of Cats: Spiritual wisdom from Our Feline good friends

Not surprisingly, as the author of two volumes of Purrs of wisdom that are all about what we can discover from our cats, The Karma of Cats: Spiritual wisdom from Our Feline good friends “had me at hello.” I understood I would like this book before I even turned the very first page, as well as I wasn’t disappointed.

In this lovely book, spiritual teachers, writers, as well as animal professionals show on the life lessons as well as the gifts they have got from their feline friends, from unconditional like to getting in touch with our spiritual nature to respecting our cats for who they are.

I enjoyed all the stories, however discovered myself especially touched by Baby’s Purr. This starving, bedraggled bit feline came into Damien Echols’ life after he spent 18 years on death row for a criminal offense he didn’t commit. She ended up playing a important function in his healing process. “Baby has assisted me back to health and wellness as surely as I did her,” he writes.

I likewise liked Alice Walker’s poem I Was born to Hold a Cat, which is one of the most lovely writings about cats that I have ever come across.

This is not a book to be checked out cover to cover. It is meant to be savored one chapter at a time. enable yourself time after reading each chapter to take in the message contained in each story, as well as to show on the lessons your own cats have taught you over your lifetime.

How Linus learned canine Play – unsuitable canine Play part 2 of 3

This post may include affiliate links. We may earn money or products from the companies discussed in this post.
Almost four years ago while browsing Petfinder.com I came across pictures of a couple fluffy Australian Shepherd mix puppies at the Carson shelter in Los Angeles, CA. I had been searching for a puppy for the past month and had my eye on either a Labrador Retriever or a golden Retriever…Australian Shepherds were also on the radar.
As numerous of you know I ended up picking up a tiny black puppy and named him Linus. check out this post I wrote dedicated To My canine Linus.
Linus The Australian Shepherd Mix
Of course all wasn’t ideal from day 1. In fact, as soon as we arrived at home I asked my girlfriend to get Linus (he was sleeping in a box) and bring him into the garage. When she went to get him he was so sound asleep she though he was dead and was trying to figure out how to break it to me. other problems included stomach infection, worms, anemia, and flea infestation (he had dried up blood all over his ears and head). Linus slept many of the first 3 days he stayed with me. After a visit to the vet, a little cleanup, medication, and lots of love Linus was stumbling around like any other little puppy.

How Linus learned canine Play
At an early age Linus learned to play well with cats. My sister’s cat Lulu was only a few months older than Linus and both cat and canine grew up together for the first year of their lives. in some cases Linus would chase Lulu other times Lulu would chase Linus. It was quite the sight viewing a cat chase a canine or view the cat hide in the planters then jump out to ambush the unsuspecting puppy.
Linus was great with cats then came his first interactions with dogs. While it wasn’t an terrible experience he learned from my parents canine (we think he’s a Cairn Terrier) Ralphie. Ralphie is very smart, very hyper, very possessive, and undisciplined. The good thing is he only weighs about 12 pounds. Linus also weighed 12 pounds when we brought him home, but he was no match as a puppy for an adult dog. Here’s a video of one of their first play sessions.

As you can see Ralphie is a little rough with poor little Linus. As a result now when Linus plays with Ralphie in the same yard he does exactly the same thing Ralphie would do to him as a puppy.

Chases him…runs him over…runs away…then does it again…
Now that you’ve seen how Linus learned to play how do you think he treated Stetson and Derby when they first entered the household?
Check Out much more information On unsuitable canine Play
Tomorrow’s short article will have some great video of Linus playing with puppy Stetson and puppy Derby.

Keep your animals safe at Easter

keep your animals safe and pleased during the Easter holiday celebrations.

1.  pass on poisonous plants. Some popular plants-including Easter lilies-are highly toxic to animals and can easily show fatal if ingested.

2.  resist giving animals as Easter presents.  Bunnies, chicks, ducks and other animals are adorable, but people often forget that these cute little animals grow up into adult animals who require a commitment to offer daily care for the rest of their lives.

3.  get rid of harmful decorations.  Easter basket decorations-including plastic grass-are harmful to animals if ingested. The turf can become twisted within a pet’s intestines and can be fatal if not caught rapidly enough. candy wrappers, plastic eggs and small toy parts can also pose a danger to pets.  use tissue paper instead of plastic turf and do a thorough clean-up after Easter celebrations.

4.  give your pet some peace.  Loud noises, erratic movements from children and crowds of people can be very stressful for animals. If your pet isn’t up for the chaos of an Easter egg hunt or family dinner, put her in a quiet area of the house when guests are visiting.

5.  keep your pet out of the Easter baskets and away from candy, including chocolate. candy can be harmful to pets, and chocolate is toxic to cats and dogs.

Amber and I would like to wish you and your furry family members a very pleased Easter filled with joy, happiness and treats!

Pricing simplified

By Khris Berry
February 28, 2020
One of the most typical concerns dealt with by any type of groomer, grooming company or pet expert is exactly how to cost your services. The answers, however, frequently variety from complex formulas to undecipherable strategies, depending upon your company as well as finance background.

When you are selling a product or good, there are retail formulas that you can comply with which will guarantee appropriate pricing, as well as thus, appropriate profit. however exactly how do you begin identifying the cost for your services? exactly how do you correctly catch your skill, experience, service as well as time into that elusive final number we phone call “price”?

How numerous of you reading this called other grooming shops in your area when you were identifying your own service pricing? The flaw in that technique lies in the truth that not every company has the exact same costs or overhead; just since one cost works for the corner shop does not imply the exact same cost works for the other corner Shop.

Unfortunately, numerous groomers are challenged when it concerns establishing appropriate pricing strategies. A great cost structure will not only enable your company to thrive, however likewise offer space for economic growth. That is a elegant method of stating that numerous groomers discover themselves in a pickle when their pricing does not grow with their business. They are dealt with with outrage as well as pushback from their clients when they enact cost increases, as well as they struggle to discover margins to boost their own wages in addition to worker pay as well as benefits. So exactly how can you produce a pricing technique that grows with your company while enabling you the capability to modification your pricing as your costs modification over time?

Let’s look at a typical situation which groomers frequently encounter when it concerns having stagnant pricing as well as a flawed cost setting strategy.
Advertisements

Darcy began grooming a number of years back as well as based her pricing on her nearest competitor at the time; they charged $45 dollars to groom a Shih Tzu so she charged $46 dollars to groom the exact same dog. She handled relatively well, as well as before she understood it, she had scores of Shih Tzu clients routinely going to her shop (as well as numerous other breeds, too).

Over time, her costs of doing company increased; the shampoos she utilized ended up being much more expensive, she had to replace her grooming table as well as dryer, as well as her rent, utilities, insurance coverage as well as taxes were all enhancing each year. She instituted a little cost boost to try to handle the rising costs, however her clients pushed back (hard). In fact, a few left as well as discovered other groomers.

After one more year, Darcy discovered that the cost boost was not sufficient to stem the rising tide of costs she dealt with in her business. She was working harder than ever however seemed to be making less. However, the unfavorable reaction from her clients during the last cost boost made her reluctant to boost the costs again.

What ought to Darcy do? Why was Darcy having a hard time to keep up?

Groomers like Darcy are frequently seeking dialogue for exactly how as well as when to execute cost boosts when, in fact, the genuine response they ought to be seeking is exactly how to establish a cost technique that fits for inflation, enhanced expense of living as well as rising expenses.

So, where do you begin in establishing a pricing technique that will make it through the test of time?

The one irreplaceable commodity in your company is you—and your time. Although you utilize water, electric, shampoo as well as a whole variety of other products which have a expense connected with them, your time is the most important commodity you are selling as a groomer.

Every groomer can fairly as well as safely service a restricted number of dogs each day; each as well as every one of us is restricted by time. based on that reality, I suggest that you establish a pricing structure that is developed on the time it takes to total the services you offer.

To establish a cost technique based on time, you requirement to comply with a few easy parameters.

You should understand the costs to run your business; each month, week, day as well as hour has a expense connected with it. In easy terms, if you add up all the costs you can expect to encounter, plus your profit, as well as divide by the number of hours you can really work each day, you will identify your hourly rate.

Here is an example: Groomer A has regular costs of $1200 (this includes whatever from lease to water to paperclips). She desires to bring house a revenue of $600. Therefore, Groomer A needs to make (gross) $1800/week. Groomer A works 8 hours per day/5 days per week; however, is really only grooming dogs for about 6 hours every day while the staying 2 hours isnull

Book review: Curiosity Thrilled the cat by Sofie Kelly

Curiosity Thrilled the cat is the first in the brand new magical Cats Mysteries series. even if I didn’t already love cat-themed mysteries, the cover would have drawn me in for sure: cats and books, my two favorite things!

 From the publisher:

When librarian Kathleen Paulson moved to Mayville Heights, Minnesota, she had no idea that two strays would nuzzle their way into her life. Owen is a tabby with a catnip addiction and Hercules is a stocky tuxedo cat who shares Kathleen’s fondness for Barry Manilow. but beyond all the fur and purrs, there’s something a lot more to these felines.

When murder interrupts Mayville’s Wild rose music Festival, Kathleen finds herself the prime suspect. a lot more sensational is her realization that Owen and Hercules are magical-and she’s counting on their skills to fix a purr-fect murder.

I loved everything about this book. The character of Kathleen, a figured out amateur sleuth whose partner in Boston went on holiday and returned home married, which prompted her step to Minnesota, is very likeable. The small Minnesota town she moves to is home to a cast of satisfying secondary characters ranging from interesting to slightly bizarre. but it’s the cats who steal the show in this mystery. Owen is addicted to his Fred the funky chicken catnip toys, and Hercules is a fan of Barry Manilow’s music, which is absolutely one of the a lot more special character traits I’ve seen in a cat!

I like if cats don’t talk in cat-themed mysteries, and these two don’t, but they do help fix the mystery, and at times, overshadow the human characters. I had no problem with that! but what really endeared me to Owen and Hercules is the fact that they seem to have magical powers: they can appear and disappear at will. Okay, so far, nothing that your average pet cat can’t do, right? but Owen and Hercules appear to be able to walk through walls and other solid surfaces.

The murder mystery gets solved, with a lot of help from the cats, but the magical properties of the two cats are left up in the air. Some readers may be bothered by this, but I actually liked it – it makes me look forward to the next book in the series even more.

Curiosity Thrilled the cat is a whimsical, funny, magical read for cat and mystery lovers.

Sounds like a winner! Is there an age range you recommend for this book? I am thinking it might make a great gift for someone I know who is 13. What do you think?

I’m really bad at gauging whether a book is proper for kids. 13 and up is probably fine for this one, especially if it’s for a kid who enjoys reading mysteries (and loves cats, of course!).

It sounds good, and I like the play on words of the title. It doesn’t bother me if cat characters talk.

Isn’t it a great title? between the title and the cover, how could you not be attracted to this book!
