Dealing with the Dickersons

By Kathy Hosler
October 4, 2019
We all get phone calls from people who want special treatment as well as a bargain price. Those individuals are understood as “The Dickersons”. They will ‘dicker’ on the cost as well as every bit detail of the groom.

“Hi, I’m calling to see what you fee to groom a dog. He’s a genuine great boy. I clean him daily with my own hairbrush. The breeder told me that he won’t requirement groomed up until he is a year old, however I can’t see his eyes. I’ll bath him before I bring him—that will make his grooming cheaper, won’t it? Oh, as well as I requirement him done today.”

We all get phone calls from people who want special treatment as well as a bargain price. Those individuals are understood as “The Dickersons”. They will ‘dicker’ on the cost as well as every bit detail of the groom. They want you to go above as well as beyond to satisfy their requests, however are unwilling to pay what your services are worth. It’s like they expect to get all the amenities of a high-end resort, however are only ready to pay for a one–night stay at Motel 6.

To the Dickersons, cost is uppermost in their mind as well as the choosing aspect in selecting a groomer. What they frequently don’t take into consideration is that it’s not just a concern of price, it’s a concern of value got for the money spent.

We all like to get bargains, so when people ask about your pricing, don’t be angered or get defensive. utilize it as an chance to inform them about what makes your services worth more. You have to offer yourself as well as explain the value you give them as well as their pets.
Advertisements

“In reality, I may be a lot more costly than others,” you say. “But that’s since I utilize high high quality products, state–of–the–art equipment, as well as I routinely go to continuing education to supply the newest as well as finest services for your pet.”

Most people truly like their family pets as well as will not hesitate to spend money on them, particularly when they feel they are getting exceptional value for that money. The amount you fee for a groom may be vastly different than what other groomers charge.

When it pertains to setting your prices, your charges requirement to cover all of your day–to–day service expenses, lease or mobile van payment, utilities, products as well as equipment, worker expenses, insurances, etc. everything counts. If you are just guessing exactly how much you requirement to charge, you may not be in service for long. when you understand what your costs are, you can determine exactly how much money you requirement to produce each day. Whether you fee by the pet or by the hour, you understand what you have to bring in to make ends satisfy as well as make a profit.

So exactly how do you manage it when somebody wants a discount? choose in development what your policy will be on providing discount rates or complimentary services, as well as then stay with it. No matter exactly how outlandish or demanding of a request somebody makes, stay calm as well as offer with it in a expert way according to that policy.

“Hi, I have two dogs as well as I am thinking about having them groomed by your mobile service. What do you fee as well as do I get a discount rate for the second pet dog considering that you can groom them both in one trip?”

“I have a service pet dog (he’s got a vest as well as everything). will you groom him for free?”

“My last groomer charged $45.00 to groom my second generation tiny Aussie Doodle. Do you cost match?”

Having a policy in location assists get rid of being caught off guard by a Dickerson. It is absolutely your option if you want to provide somebody a minimized price, however don’t enable yourself to be bullied into it. keep in mind, you can discount rate yourself ideal out of business. And, when you lower someone’s cost or provide them a complimentary service, they will want as well as expect it every time. Additionally, they may tell their buddies as well as neighbors, as well as they will want one too.

“Hi, you groom my neighbor’s two Schnauzers. If I get mine done at the exact same time, it will be more affordable for all three, right? And, she stated that you always provide them a blueberry facial for free. I want that for my dog, too.”

Don’t enable the Dickersons to take advantage of you. Groomers are notoriously generous. We donate our time as well as talents at regional shelters as well as rescue groups. And, at times, do grooms for free, however you can’t provide away your skills on a everyday basis. Your time is precious, so don’t discount rate your labor. As a expert you need to stand firm as well as tell the Dickersons that your grooming costs are non–negotiable.

Instead of providing discounts, boost your revenues by doing service promotions. They make the client feel that they are getting additional value as well as they likewise benefit you.  offer a ‘special of the month’. It might be anull

Introducing the new Hauspanther Collection by Primetime Petz

Kate Benjamin’s mission is to improve the lives of cats and their humans through design, by showing cat guardians how to create living spaces that accommodate the natural instincts of cats without compromising the human’s sense of style and comfort. Kate has been doing this through her website, Hauspanther, and as co-author, with Jackson Galaxy, of two books on cat-friendly design. and cats’ (and their humans’) lives just got even better: Kate is launching her own line of cat furniture!

The Hauspanther Collection by Primetime Petz was introduced at last week’s global Pet Expo. The collection features four pieces, all developed by Kate: the Catchall, a multi-function wall-mounted cat scratcher and perch with a plush toy below and toy storage inside, two wall mounted perches, and the Cubitat multi-level cat bed.

All pieces are made from wood and feature thick felt pads and replaceable sisal scratchers. Unlike Kate’s Made in the USA line of cat toys, these pieces are manufactured in China. Kate thought long and hard about this, and ultimately made this decision to make the line budget-friendly for a larger audience. I think she’s accomplished her goal, with projected prices ranging from $49.99 to $69.99 – a steal for this kind of quality.

Hauspanther and Primetime Petz are planning to offer the collection in white with grey felt pads and espresso with beige pads. I like both color options, and they’re sure to fit into a broad variety of decors.

I will have much more information on availability of the new line soon. Allegra and Ruby think the Cubitat would be a good addition to our home, and Ruby even said she would share it with Allegra.

Do you think your cats would like these pieces?

Global Pet Expo 2016: Highlights from the World’s biggest Pet product show

last week I made my annual trip to worldwide Pet Expo in Orlando. This trade show is the largest pet product trade show in the US, with 6.3 miles of screen area featuring 1,300 vendors from almost 40 countries. I tried to see as much as I might in three days, as well as I understand I walked a great deal more than 6 miles each day! In the coming weeks as well as months, I’ll be bringing you a great deal more info about a few of the great new products I saw there. Today, I’d like to share just a few personal highlights with you.

I was most excited about getting my very first look at the new furniture line by Hauspanther’s Kate Benjamin. Kate is introducing this new line in conjunction with Primetime Petz later this year. Needless to say, with Kate behind the design, the pieces in the collection are not only well-designed from a cat’s perspective, they’re likewise beautiful! I’ll show you the line in more detail later this week.

Pioneer Pet products introduced two new products I liked a lot: a variation of one of our all time preferred scratching posts, the ultimate scratch ‘n Play, as well as Bootsies corner Scratcher.

Our buddies at Podtrackers had a super awesome booth screen featuring creator Sebastian Langton’s gorgeous feline Smokey. Pod is still the smallest of the GPS trackers on the market, as well as as such, the one finest fit to cats. Pod is one of the seven prizes you can win in our anniversary giveaway!

I was delighted to see new products in the Vesper line of feline furniture by Hagen. even after whatever I saw at worldwide this year, I still think about this line one of the most gorgeous lines of feline furniture. The line will likewise be offered in a new quite red color, in addition to the walnut as well as white finishes.

Bavarian feline toys had a super fun holiday screen that made me keep in mind my youth Christmases in Germany. The screen showed off a few of their new holiday themed toys.

Kate Benjamin with Mimi
The people at Dr. Catsby’s booth had one of the most innovative displays, as well as even better, they had a kitty at their booth! The lovely Mimi was one of the most mellow as well as relaxed cats I’ve ever seen as well as made a purrfect ambassador for this ingenious bowl designed to prevent whisker stress.

with Nikki Moustaki, her dog Jasmine, as well as Kate Benjamin
And of course, no trade show would be total without a bit personal fun. On St. Patrick’s Day, a group of us went out to celebrate. as well as yes, I understand it appears like Jasmine had a few as well many cocktails, however I guarantee you that the only thing she had to drink was water!

Hundreds of feline greeting cards, only a mouse click away

In this age of e-mail as well as e-cards, receiving a “real” greeting card in the mail is a genuine treat. I understand rather a few of my good friends feel that way, too, as well as as a result, I enjoy buying for greeting cards. However, as with whatever else in life, time is precious, as well as choice at card stores can vary greatly from one see to the next. When the people at greeting Card world approached me about examining their cards, I was intrigued.

I got to select a choice of five cards. seems simple enough, right? Well, not really, thinking about that greeting Card world has 680 cat-themed cards to select from!  I selected the say thanks to you card above for its special style as well as captivating colors, even though red is not normally a color I’m drawn to. I just believed the card was gorgeous.

This birthday card cracked me up. The inside reads “Mark this special birthday with your own special style. accomplish the unconventional, as well as do it with a smile.” now that’s believing outside the box!

I went for adorable rather than funny when I chosen this Halloween card – who can withstand a black kitten popping out of a pumpkin!

The other two cards I picked are birthday cards, as well as they’re fabulous, however considering that I plan to send them to people who checked out this blog, I won’t share them here.

Greeting Card Universe’s tagline is “any card imaginable” – as well as thinking about that they have a lot more than 8000 birthday cards alone, I believe that’s most likely true. Their browse function seems to be extremely well developed, you can browse on quite much any type of combination of events as well as themes as well as a large choice of cards will pop up. You can even customize the cards on the internet as well as they will ship them directly to the recipient. The expense of $3.00 per card is reasonable, as well as they offer quantity discount rates as well as specials.

To discover out a lot more about greeting Card Universe, as well as search their large choice of cards, please see their website.

Keeping Track of Your Cat: GPS vs. Microchip technology

guest post by Loren Brutsch

One in three pets go missing in their lifetime. Over 10 million pets go missing every year. Sadly, many are not reunited with their guardians. In addition to the heartache caused by a lost pet, it can cost hundreds of dollars even when a pet is found. This is why an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Is a microchip enough?

GPS trackers let you locate your pet on demand and monitor and record his activity on a smart phone or computer via an app. Some believe that a GPS tracker is overkill when their pet already has a microchip, but this is a misperception based on not fully understanding how these two technologies differ. To ensure a pet’s safety, it’s important to know the risks and benefits of the technologies available so that an informed decision can be made based on what’s best for the guardian and his or her pet.

Benefits and limitations of microchips

Microchips are convenient because they are as small as a grain of rice and have no power requirements and therefore can be inserted into the animal’s scruff without issue. However, the convenience of a microchip typically falls short the day a pet goes missing. The major flaw with the microchip is its reliance on the animal being found.

The device uses RFID technology (Radio-Frequency Identification) and needs to be scanned in order to extract the unique microchip number. This unique number then needs to be registered along with current contact information. Unfortunately, it is quite common that registration is not completed or the information is out of date, which typically results in the animal not being reunited with its family. This means that a microchip is useless unless the pet is found and taken to a location that can scan the chip.

Microchips don’t help locate a pet, they only help identify it –and this important distinction has meant the permanent loss of many an animal. Microchipping is essential, but it is only one tool.

Benefits and limitations of GPS units

GPS (Global positioning System) units cover three main categories, all of which differ slightly and therefore have their own benefits as well as limitations. The first category of GPS units is the GPS recorder. Recorders are small, lightweight units that offer post activity map based tracking, which means you have to wait for the animal and unit to return before being able to upload its data and see where the animal has been. While they can be fun by giving the owner the ability to see what his or her pet gets up to during the day, as well as useful by letting the owner monitor a pet’s health habits, the GPS recorder cannot locate a pet in real time. In this repect, it is no better than a microchip when a pet isn’t found.

The second category of GPS is the Real-Time Near field GPS unit, which is another small, lightweight unit that offers global positioning by transmitting a location signal to a mobile device through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Real-Time Near field GPS units are definitely a step up from microchips and recorders because they allow the owner to take a proactive approach to finding a missing pet by offering range positioning and perimeter alerts. However, distance is a limitation. These units cannot broadcast a real-time location unless in range of a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi device. What this means is that the unit has to come within about 30 meters, or 100 feet, of a mobile device to be able to recognise the unit and broadcast the pet’s location. If the animal is out of range or if buildings interrupt the signal, the animal cannot be located.

Real-Time global GPS

The most comprehensive option within the categories of GPS units is the Real-Time global GPS unit. These units offer global positioning and unlimited range. due to an internal SIM card, they are able to broadcast their own location, allowing the user to find their pet anywhere at anytime. These units offer the most reputable way to recover a lost pet, however, they are also larger and heavier than the other technologies. That said, there have been some breakthroughs in unit size. The smallest Real-Time global GPS unit, Pod, is about the same size as a wine cork.

Ultimately, a combination of Microchipping and comprehensive GPS location technology is your best bet. and don’t wait for the day when the chip can have GPS location ability – that day is likely a long way off because of battery and antenna issues that make an external GPS unit essential.

The importance of good dental health for Your pets

dental disease is the most frequently diagnosed health problem for pets.  Dogs and cats are particularly prone to tooth and gum diseases.  An astounding 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show signs of oral disease by age 3, according to the American Veterinary dental Society.

Normal teeth in both cats and dogs should be white or just a little yellow.  Gums should be light pink and smooth (except in breeds with pigmented gums).

Oral disease begins with a build up of plaque and tartar in your pet’s mouth.  Without proper preventive and therapeutic care, plaque and tartar buildup leads to periodontal disease, which manifests in red and/or swollen and tender gums, bad breath, and bleeding.  When the gums are swollen, they can be uncomfortable – a good rule of thumb is that if it looks like it might be painful, it probably is. pets are masters at masking pain – when in doubt, assume that your pet is experiencing at least some discomfort.

The inflammation and infection associated with periodontal disease can lead to damage to other organs such as the heart, kidney and liver, and lead to other serious health problems.  dental disease can also be an indicator of immune system disorders, particulary in cats.

Common indicators of oral disease in dogs include bad breath, a change in eating or chewing habits, pawing at the face or mouth and depression.  If you notice any of these, don’t wait until your dog’s next annual check up, take him to the veterinarian for a extensive exam.

Cats rarely show any symptoms at all unless the situation is literally life-threatening.  They will eat even when their level of chronic mouth pain would send a person to the emergency room.  They almost never paw at their face, even with loose or abscessed teeth.  They get pretty smelly breath from eating cat food, so it’s tough to tell by smelling the breath whether your cat has dental disease or just had breakfast.  but even though they don’t show us much in the way of outward symptoms, chronic dental/periodontal disease can cause severe and typically irreversible damage to internal organs.  So it’s important to get regular veterinary exams at least once a year, and twice a year for cats six and older or for cats with a known history of dental problems.

Since our pets won’t just sit still and open their mouths to have their teeth cleaned like humans, dental procedures for pets require general anesthesia, something that makes many pet owners nervous.  While there are always risks with anesthesia, they can be minimized with a extensive pre-anesthetic check up, including bloodwork to assess kidney and liver function and rule out other underlying health issues.  This will allow your veterinarian to customize the anesthesia to your pet’s health status and potential special needs.  keep in mind that leaving dental disease untreated may present a far greater risk than anesthesia.

For more information on anesthesia for pets, read this guest post by Dr. Louise Murray about safe Anesthesia for Pets.

A special thank you goes to Dr. fern Crist of the cat hospital of Fairfax for her contribution to this article.

Esme, I’m a little concerned that your vet is not recommeding a dental cleaning. I’ve always been taught that if there’s gingivitis and even slight redness, a cleaning is indicated. It’s always better to treat gingivities at the very early stages. You might want to think about having your kitty checked again in three to six months rather than waiting an entire year.

Other than brushing, which, for most cat parents isn’t realistic, there are a few other things you can do:

– eliminate dry food. contrary to what most people believe (and unfortunately, contrary to what a lot of vets recommend), dry food is bad for teeth. The residue from the dry food sticks to the teeth and causes more plaque than canned food does. I recommend a canned, grain-free diet.

– You can add Oxyfresh mouthrinse to their drinking water. I use it for Amber and Allegra, and I’ve also seen terrific success with cats in my years in veterinary clinics.

– This last one is a bit of leap for most people, and I haven’t done it with my own, either, but letting cats chew on some raw bones can really help scrape the teeth clean. You’ll need to do your research as to which bones are safe to use, and this should only done under your supervision.

If you haven’t had a chance to listen to the recording of our Ask the Vet seminar, you might want to do so – there’s a terrific segment on dental health, Dr. Crist goes into terrific detail about why it’s so important and also about prevention.

I hope these help. let me know if you have any questions.

The night before Catmas: The Adoption version

By Harry Shubin

T’was the night after the adoption event,
And all through the store,
Not a creature was stirring, not even a stray cricket on the floor
The center coordinators were all snug in their beds
Thinking of ways to step adoptions ahead.

The cage cards were hung on the enclosures with care,
Each telling the story of the cats who were there.
Poor Fluffy, poor Mittens, Whiskers and Sprite
Abandoned and alone on this cold Post-Adoption night.

Each cat was nestled in a Maddie’s Blanket, and thought twice,
I wasn’t naughty, I really was nice.
Why was I left in a shelter,
Almost about to pay the price.

When out in the store, there arose such a clatter,
All the kitties stood, stretched, took a lap of water, nibbled some food, groomed themselves for a moment,
And sought to see what was the matter.

When what to their wondering eyes must appear,
But an old, tired-looking volunteer.
She was clothed in lost pet dog blue, from her head to her toe,
Her t-shirt full of claw holes, her hair the color of snow.

There was fur on her clothing,
A cat toy behind her ear,
She had catnip in her pockets,
On her sleeve, an unidentified smear.

“Look at you kitties, stuck here for the night!
This will not do, this is not right!
Come Scruffy, Come Midnight, come with me all,
I’m taking you home, we’ll have a ball!”

“We’ll play with felt mousies,
We’ll eat lots of treats,
I’ll brush you and comb you,
And nibble on your cute little feets!”

She gathered some carriers, and began to pack them all,
When a little grey kitten, who was rounder than tall,
Asked her a question, with a mew quite small:

“Are you our adopter, are you taking us home?
Will you love us forever, and ever, when we’re combed?”
The volunteer sat down, in her eyes there was sadness,
But then, in a twinkle, the kittens saw gladness!

“No! I’m just your foster, though I’m taking you home,
It’s only for the holidays, where you will roam,
Free of these cages, it will be fun.
And after the weekend, when we’re all done,

Back to the store, we will be on our way,
But this time, with you I will stay.
I’ll tell the adopters that once in their home,
You’ll be amazing cats, when you’re all grown,

For you’re with lost pet dog now, you’ll always be safe
You’ll find love, You’ll have a terrific place,
You’ll always be cared for, even if things go wrong,
But they won’t, because our counselors are strong.

They’ve been well trained in interviewing,
They know what to do,
To find best forever homes,
For each one of you.”

So with her they went,
Out to her car,
Though it was cold,
It didn’t seem far.

And then each one found a home
That was good and was right,
And as they left the store, one and all.
They thought they heard the volunteer call

“Merry Catmas to all, and to all a good life!”

How Do I stop My dog From eating Poop?

This publish may contain affiliate links. We may make money or products from the business mentioned in this post.
Your puppy’s eating poop as well as you’re grossed out. Eww!
How can that wonderful pup who provides you kisses engage in such a disgusting habit?
There are many reasons why dogs eat feces. Some are behavioral as well as others medical.
As a dog fitness instructor as well as habits specialist, I’ve dealt with many households whose canine companions ate feces.
Dog about To eat Poops
Once we figured out why the pups ate poop, we were able to stop them from doing so.
The technical term for eating feces is coprophagia. however most of us just phone call it a stinky habit.
Theories Why Dogs began eating Feces
Dogs evolved as scavengers. They ate whatever they might discover on the ground or in the trash. So eating poop ended up being a method to fend off hunger.

Some other theories are that dogs ate poop to make it through since food might be scarce. Or they ate poop so other pack members wouldn’t get intestinal parasites from stool lying around.
The canine mom licks puppies to ensure that they’ll defecate. The mom likewise cleans up the puppy as well as eats their feces for about the very first three weeks after birth.
COLBY’S EXPERIENCE: Our golden Retriever, Raven had 4 gorgeous litters. She was a fantastic mom as well as was constantly cleaning up (eating) her puppies poop. She would have done this up until the puppies were full grown adults, however we generally cut her off from cleaning duties when the puppies were around 4 weeks old.
Is eating Poop Normal?
Puppies check out the world with their mouths. Some eat poop as they discover it extremely inviting. however they usually outgrow the habit by about nine months old.
When adult dogs eat feces, there’s frequently a behavioral or medical reason.

COLBY’S EXPERIENCE: Our black lab Stetson liked to eat. Yep, he liked to eat poop too. We talked to our vet about it, however he never came up with a medical reasons for Stetson’s habit.
What Dogs Are more likely To eat Poop?
Of program puppies are generally more likely to eat poop than adult dogs are.
It’s likewise more typical in multi-dog households.
Females are more likely to engage in the habit. as well as intact males are least likely to eat feces.
Dogs are more likely to eat one more animal’s poop than their own.
Some stool eaters will eat “fresh” feces no more than two days old. however they won’t touch the older stuff. They are the connoisseurs of the poop-eating world, I guess.
Dogs can have specific tastes. Generally, they won’t eat old poop or stool that’s as well soft or diarrhea.
COLBY’S EXPERIENCE: We’ve had lots of puppies at our home throughout the years as well as so far to the very best of my memory only two: Raven, a female golden Retriever as well as Stetson, a male Labrador Retriever ate their poop.

What Are the Behavioral reasons Dogs eat Poop?
There are many possible reasons why dogs eat poop. They variety from boredom to more complex reasons.
We have to analyze why they’re eating feces in order to stop them.
There may be environmental stress or behavioral triggers such as the following:
1. Boredom or not being exercised.
You’re in a rush to leave for work. So you can’t provide Fido his usual morning walk.
He’s truly hyper as well as wishes to run around to get rid of his excess energy.
As you put on your coat, you see him poop as well as quickly devour the new-found snack.
Your pup had so much pent-up energy he had to expel. as well as running around stimulated him to poop.

And in his anxious state, he ate the feces.
Or you leave your dog alone as well as he’s bored. He has no toys to stimulate his mind.
Then, when the chance provides itself, he happily plays with as well as eats his own feces.
2. Anxiety
Some dogs are harshly corrected for housetraining indiscretions.
If you holler at or otherwise harshly correct your pup for having an accident, he may ended up being scared.
He may likewise try to “hide the evidence” as well as eat the poop the next time he has an accident.
And some dogs with separation stress and anxiety may poop since they’re stressed when left alone. They may then likewise eat their stool.
3. environmental Stress
Dogs who are isolated away from humans can establish the habit of eating poop.

This can happen to dogs living in kennels or dogs required to online in the horrible conditions at a puppy mill.
Or it can occur when dogs are required to online away from their people, such as being confined to the basement.
It can even occur to some dogs who are confined to little areas as well as ended up being stressed.
4. inappropriate association with poop
Some dogs are fed near a potty area. It may be their own or even near the cat’s litter box.
The bad dog then establishes a habit of linking genuine food with feces.
5. Scenting the odor of feces on their mother’s breath
