Feliscratch by Feliway™

Feliscratch by Feliway™ is a easy answer to your cat’s improper scratching in the home.

When scratching, cats mark their territory by leaving visual and chemical messages from their paws. This scent message, undetectable to us, is a pheromone known as the feline interdigital semiochemical. Scratching can also be a sign of tension in cats. When applied on the desired scratching surface, it mimics the visual and chemical signals to encourage the cat to scratch there again. Feliscratch by FELIWAY™ has been clinically proven to help decrease or stop unwanted scratching in the home, displayed both on vertical and horizontal surfaces, and redirect cats to their scratching post.

Safe toys for Your cat

What should I play with today?

There are hundreds of cat toys on the market, and as anyone owned by a cat knows, there is no way of telling for sure which toy will delight your cat, or which will generate a quick sniff, followed by a look of disdain and a turned tail.  So if you’re like most cat parents, you will continue to bring home toys in your quest to amuse and spoil your feline charges.

When shopping for cat toys, the most important thing  is the safety factor.  cat toy safety really comes down to one thing:  if it can be swallowed, it’s dangerous.

This means stay away from toys that have small parts that can come loose during an energetic play session.  Anything with glued on parts, metal pieces, tassles or strings should be a no-no.  sometimes you can remove these parts (which is how Amber ended up with a lot of what we call “blind and deaf mice” – once the glued on eyes and ears are removed, these mice turn into perfectly safe toys).  but it’s always best to find a toy that doesn’t require removal of loose parts.

Toys with strings and rubber bands can be fun for your cat as long as you supervise play.  never leave these toys with your cat unattended – rubber bands can loop themselves around your cat’s neck and choke her, strings can be chewed and ingested, and can present a life-threatening emergency if the piece of strings wraps itself around the cat’s intestines.

So which toys are safe for your cat?

Amber loves anything that’s stuffed with catnip.  The fewer adornments, the better.  A great source for simple, and safe catnip toys is The mouse Factory – they have a wide selection of fun toys, and their catnip is seriously potent.

The Kong line of cat toys offers a lot of fun and safe choices as well, you can find a sampling in the conscious cat Store and you’ll also find them in many pet stores.

Interactive cat toys are great fun for you and your cat – after all, what’s more fun than a rigorous play session with your kitties?  some of these interactive toys, such as the feather teaser (a feather toy on the end of a string) require supervision because of the string part, but they can provide hours of fun for cat and human.

Of course, there are plenty of choices for toys that don’t require a trip to the pet store – paper bags, boxes, empty toilet paper rolls, or even just a wadded up piece of paper can be as much fun for your cat as expensive, store-bought toys.

Whatever safe toy you choose for your cat, have fun!

Amber’s current favorite is a fuzzy crab-like toy on the end of a long fuzzy string.  She allowed me to film her for a few seconds while she was playing with it:

What are some of your cats’ favorite toys?

Hello Ingrid,

Thank you for bringing this to everyone’s attention!

When my cat Henry was a small kitten, he got himself completely tangled up in a very stretchy elastic band that was attached to the top of the door frame and had a stuffed cat toy on the end. He probably would have strangled himself if someone had not been there to rescue him.

I think some cat toys (especially that type of product) should come with a warning label cautioning cat and kitten parents to only give them to their kitty children when we are there to supervise their play!

How sweet that Merlin still loves his squirrel toy from when he was a kitten, Layla. Coco sounds like she would have no trouble figuring out what to do with a “live” feather toy.

Merlin’s favorite toy is ratty old squirrel from when he was a kitten fifteen years ago! He also has collection of teddy bears. His sister Coco likes anything with feathers, ideally still attached to a live bird…just kidding ?

I’m fairly selective about the toys I give my cats, especially small kittens. Anything that has the potential to be ingested is out of the question. Their most favorites are any type of mouse that can be carried in their mouth and anything with a feather on it. Yes, something as simple as a paper bag (don’t ever use plastic) wadded up paper or a bottle cap will work just fine, too. thanks Ingrid, excellent points.

Want a closer Community? bring in the Dogs

My book fit As Fido devotes an entire chapter to the value of socializing like your dog−meaning meeting and greeting your neighbors needs to be a top health priority. In today’s world of backyard decks instead of front porches, electric garage door openers, and social media replacing sidewalk chats, it’s easy to feel disconnected from your neighborhood. need a cup of sugar? You’ll probably buy some online to be delivered to your front door instead of checking out a neighbor for sugar, a cup of coffee, and a bit of neighborhood news. A 2010 us report found that only 42 percent of people talk with their neighbors several times a week and only 15 percent share favors with their neighbors.

Feeling connected with one’s community is actually an crucial part of your health. Social connectedness has been linked to minimized anxiety and anxiety and improved well-being. strong social connections are also associated with minimized risk for depression and decreased risk of dying.

One of the easiest ways to improve your social connectedness quotient is to get hold of a leash, whistle for Fido, and start taking regular pet dog walks. A new study investigated the impact of pet dog walking on community connectedness for adults 50 years old or older. The results have been published in journal health & Place. Here’s what they found:

People walking their dogs frequently (at least 4 times per week) were twice as likely to feel connected to their community.

Those walking their dogs frequently were over 10 times a lot more likely to get in the world health organization recommended 150 minutes of exercise weekly.

Dog owners who infrequently walked their dogs had no better sense of community or fitness level than people without dogs.

This study supports that making pet dog walking a regular part of your routine has both physical and social benefits. It’s crucial to remember that waving to your neighbor, sharing a bit of news, and talking about what’s happening with each other are crucial for helping you feel a part of your neighborhood and they help improve your health.

Fusion Style: double Stacked Ear

By Dawn Omboy
October 29, 2018

This is Toby, a cute small Poodle I introduced you to in a previous article. I thought you might like to see how this style will transition into the next trim style.

On the first visit after Toby’s sweater style, the dye pattern was still visible on his coat so I chose to concentrate on modifying the head style with a few changes to give Toby a new look. On the second visit, a month later, I was able to cut down his body close and get rid of any evidence of his former jacket design.

I re–dyed the dark brown on his feet and the bottom part of his ears to give a good pop of contrasting colors. I will go into much more detail about the ears, as this is an essential part of the total new look.

Fig 1 & 2) To give Toby the appearance of fuller ears without too much bulk on his face, I clipped out part of the cheeks and throat with a #5 blade, leaving about a finger width of long hair in front of the ear opening to give the ear much more fullness, as shown. I also left hair on his chin to be able to shape his cute little face and to have a natural deal with to hold onto while working on his head.
Advertisements

Fig 3) starting with my small curved shear, I shaped the mustache, working from the bottom up. keep in mind that you want the expression to appear “happy” so try to always work with your shears pointed up in this area and make the shape into a nice, rounded muzzle that appears to be smiling.

Fig 4) next I used a longer curved shear to create the outer circle of the head shape, from the outer edges of the mustache to behind the corner of the eyes. I then repeated this on the other side of the face.

Fig 5) I then trimmed over the top of the head and in front of the eyes, but angled the blades of my shears slightly out to give a nice, rounded and soft expression.

Fig 6) next I scissored out the space between the ears on the top of his head, giving Toby nice, fluffy ears.

Fig 7) then to make this head style a bit much more dramatic, I double bobbed his ears by making the first cut from the jawline at an angle toward the top of the backside of the ear with a straight shear.

Fig 8) I made the second cut at the bottom of the ear to match the angle of the top part. Be careful not to cut into the ear leather.

This a cute and modern new look for Toby and he was still wearing the dyed jacket from his previous groom a month earlier. On his next visit, four weeks later, the dyed pattern was grown out enough to clip it all away, leaving Toby with a close cut body and Asian teddy style legs, enhanced with brown bells at the bottom of the legs.

I brought this all together by adding brown dye to the bottom layer of the ear bob. To make this a bit much more fun, I also dyed the top layer of the ear bob purple. and once again, Toby’s mother was pleasantly surprised.

Leo plays rough

AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterTwitterShare to PinterestPinterestPinterestShare to MoreAddThisMore

We take Leo to the dog park 3-5 times a week as well as he
absolutely likes it. Leo can sense we’re going to the dog park when we get
about a mile away from it. The second he realizes it, he starts panting and
whining noises. I presume it’s out of enjoyment since the second he jumps out
of the vehicle he drags me all the method to the entrance for big dogs. The second we
unhook his harness, he takes off as well as discovers the nearest dog to play with.

I picture one of the reasons Leo likes going to work so much
(besides the constant interest from people) is since he sometimes gets to
play with other office dogs. In the office, when Leo hears his finest bud,
Dexter, has went into the office, he spends the whole day looking towards him
while simultaneously wagging his tail up until we enable some playtime.

Ever since Leo was a puppy, he’d like to rile up dogs to
play with him. It didn’t matter what size the dog was. When he was smaller, I was
always worried about him getting hurt so I would stay close-by when he was
playing with other dogs. I’ve discovered that dogs playing may look as well as noise aggressive,
but it’s usually not. I had a difficult time trying not to overreact, however I still
watched Leo like a hawk to make sure he was ok. If I heard Leo cry, then I would
grab him as well as pull him away from other dogs.
Of course, the second I let Leo go, he would go back to playing with the
same dogs.

As he got bigger, I got less worried about Leo getting hurt
and more worried about him hurting other dogs. since he’s such a friendly and
happy dog, I’m not worried about Leo biting other dogs, however it seems as though
Leo’s very first line of defense is to sit on other dogs, so I am a bit worried
about him squishing other dogs. While that isn’t a huge issue for dogs around
his size, I don’t picture a fellow pet parent with a dog less than half Leo’s
size would appreciate an 80 lb dog sitting on their 30 lb dog.

Leo still likes to rough home with other dogs, so I still
like to keep a close eye on him just in case.
