Our new Puppy – selecting to get A Weimaraner pet dog From A Breeder

My hubby as well as I made the commitment to get a weimaraner puppy.

The puppy is not even born yet, which provides us a couple of months to prepare.

If all goes well, we will bring a puppy house in mid-April just in time for my 33rd birthday.

This has been a extremely cautious decision.

I’ve been working with this breeder considering that May, emailing back as well as forth. We’ve been on a waiting listing considering that then, as well as she screens her purchasers closely. I had to show her I’m genuinely an active person as well as will be active with the pet dog (we live in a 2nd-floor, 2-bedroom apartment).

We thought about adopting a pet dog with a regional rescue. We looked at other breeders as well as likewise seriously thought about getting a Belgian malinois from an old friend.

None of these other choices felt rather right, although we were extremely available to all possibilities.

We kept coming back to these weims.

Adding one more pet dog to our household is a extremely crucial decision, one I’ve spent hours as well as hours (years) believing about.

There will be some challenges. trying to potty train a puppy on a 2nd floor apartment or condo will be one. taking care of two dogs a decade apart in age will be another. Both dogs will requirement me extremely much in the coming months, for different reasons. My patience as well as anxiety levels will be checked greatly.

But the decision feels right.

I understand the concern will come up, why didn’t you ‘rescue’?

Why get when there are so lots of dogs in need?

I expected I may feel guilty for our decision, however I don’t.

I am extremely pleased of the work I make with rescue dogs, as well as I will continue that work.

What it comes down to is we are getting the pet dog we want – an athletic pet dog to be my running, hiking as well as agility buddy.

This puppy will be increased while Ace is ideally still around, which is crucial to me. We are getting our pet dog responsibly as well as will supply a great home.

This does not indicate a shelter pet dog would’ve been a bad choice. All three of my present family pets are “hand me downs” as well as there are countless shelter as well as rescue dogs that may be a great in shape for our bit family. This puppy is likewise a great fit.

I will continue to work with great breeders as well as great rescues throughout my life with dogs.

It feels great to have made our decision as well as to have a long time to plan as well as prepare.

We’re in for a wild ride.

Do any type of of you have plans to add a new pet to your household this year?

Why my pets are not rescued animals

You will never hear me referring to my dog Ace as a “rescue.”

I don’t see him that way. I don’t see any of my pets that way. I see them as “adopted.”

I understand many of you view your own animals as rescues, and that’s OK. It’s just not a word that sits well with me because it dwells on a dog’s past rather than the present. If you know dogs, then you know they have an incredible ability to move on and live in the moment. We humans do not always have that same gift.

For example, a man called me last week to see if I would be able to walk his two lab mixes while he and his family went on vacation.

I’d have the neighbor kid do it, but my dogs are rescues, he said. You know how rescues are. They need someone with experience.

No, I didn’t know that’s how “rescues” are, but of course I didn’t say that.

It seems to me this term “rescue” is used as a bit of an excuse for our dogs’ inappropriate behaviors at times.

I truly do not think of my dog as a “rescue,” so I’ve never used that label as an excuse for his behavior – and he misbehaves plenty.

When Ace was a year old, I was the first person to take him for a walk, and he was terrible – pulling and choking himself on his chain collar.

I remember a man walked by us at Gooseberry Park with a smaller dog, and Ace was very much out of control.

“Yikes” was all the man said. Not because my dog was aggressive, but because he was pulling so hard.

I felt bad about my dog’s poor manners.

So, I worked on it, and Ace and I progressed quickly – thanks to a dog backpack, a gentle Leader and a prong collar. He passed his Canine good citizen test six months later, a test where the dog must successfully do things like ignore an approaching dog and keep to himself in a crowd.

[quote_right]”My dog is a lot of things, but my dog is not rescued.”[/quote_right]So, my dog is a “good citizen.” A role model. A friend.

My dog is a lot of things, but my dog is not rescued.

Labeling him that way would be unfair. His life was not that difficult before I had him, just different.

Many people assume that because my dog is black and “mixed” he must also be “rescued.” He’s not.

“Bless you,” a woman said to me at a community dog event. All I’d said was that Ace was a “Lab mix.”

Sure, some of us have literally rescued animals. We’ve pulled them from the streets or from high-kill shelters.

I picked up three cats from the pound, marched them right from their cages to my car and took them home. This was when cats had a 50/50 shot of making it out of that pound alive. There are few feelings as great as saving an animal in that way.

But when I think of those cats today, I don’t think of them as “rescued.”

Ninja, Nikita and Rita are all living lavish lives with friends and family of mine now. never missing a meal. lounging around on beds. Running the house, I’m sure of it.

Dwelling on “rescued” does not seem appropriate or accurate.

My own cat Beamer was adopted from a humane society, and he is by no means a “rescue” either.

He survived winter nights outside in Moorhead, Minn., by hunkering down in window wells or by whoring himself out to the neighborhood cat lady.

He did not have to be outside; it is what he wanted.

Beamer had a boneyard under the deck where he drug most of his “kills.” He came inside when he wanted to, on his terms. then left.

Today Beamer is kept indoors, and he remains a lover, a hunter, a fighter and a snuggler.

He has scuffed-up ears and a scar by his eye.

Adopted? Yes.

Rescued? Not a chance.

Do you consider your animals “rescued” animals?

Why I Didn’t want A Puppy

Note: Julia Thomson is a regular contributor to That Mutt. check out her blog Home on 129 Acres where she writes about country living and diy renovating.

Who’s been enjoying reading about Remy joining the ThatMutt family?

I have to give Lindsay a ton of credit report for being so open and real about the ups and downs of puppydom.

When we were searching for a canine to add to our family, I knew 100% that I did not want a puppy. all of my searches on Petfinder were for young or adult dogs.

Why I didn’t want a puppy

1. energy level.

My first reason for choosing an adult canine was energy level. We were committed to giving our canine lots of exercise (and living on a farm we have lots of opportunities for exercise), but we are a low key, adult household.

We wanted a canine who could be with us around the farm while we were working without needing our undivided attention every minute (breaks for scratches or zoomies or fetch were expected). and at the end of the day when the work is done, we wanted a canine who was content to doze while we viewed TV.

I wasn’t sure that we’d get that with a puppy—at least not at first.

2. Training.

My second reason for choosing an adult canine was training. This is my first dog. I wasn’t confident in my ability to train a puppy competently. I hoped that with an adult dog, he’d already have some basic obedience and be pretty much house broken.

Again, we were committed to working with our canine and had training classes lined up, but I wasn’t sure I’d be able to deal with a blank slate, like Remy.

When Baxter concerned us, he was completely housebroken and had the basic obedience skills we were looking for. There were still things to work on, whether much more obedience or mastering some tricks, so we got the opportunity to do some training—and as Lindsay says, training is ongoing.

Probably Baxter’s many essential quality is that he’s a ideal match for us in terms of energy level.

Dude is low energy. and I imply low.

He loves his walks and can run like a greyhound when we’re doing zoomies in the yard, but his default position is horizontal. In Baxter, we ended up finding the ideal canine for us.

See the post: Deep thoughts on diy from the dog

I haven’t ruled out puppies entirely. Someday, it might be the best fit for our family. However, reading about Lindsay’s adventures with Remy (I had absolutely no idea evening craziness what a thing. Yikes!) I know a puppy is certainly not best for us best now.

Lindsay is very good about emphasizing that people ought to do what is best for themselves and their dogs, whether it’s training or feeding or adopting or buying.

And I think that’s good guidance to apply to choice of what kind of canine to get too. know yourself. Be reasonable about what you can commit to. Be truthful about what type of life you lead and make the effort to try to find the best canine for you.

You, and your dog, will be happier for it.

What qualities are many essential to you in a dog?

Does anybody else share my hesitancy about raising a puppy?

Breed profile: Labradoodle

Note: This is a guest post by Omar Reyes of pet dog care Journey.

Designer dogs, hybrid dogs, puggles, goldendoodles, schnoodles, and yes, Labradoodles have become a lot more popular recently.

But aren’t they all just mixed breed dogs? Well, in a way, they are.

So what makes them so special?

Let’s take a step back and present a a lot more “formal” definition of a hybrid or designer dog.

A designer pet dog or “hybrid” is a pet dog that is a deliberate cross between two purebred dogs of different pet dog breeds.

In a way, they are also different than your normal idea of a mutt – a mix or cross of different, and normally unknown pet dog breeds.

The designer pet dog is deliberately bred and normally has parents that are very carefully selected. In the case of the Labradoodle, the breed is created by crossing a Labrador retriever and a poodle. Some breeders choose to breed Labradoodles with other Labradoodles.

You may say that a Labradoodle is still a mutt, and you may be right. but there are lots of people who would disagree. In fact, they would be ready to spend up to $2,000 (in some cases) for a quality Labradoodle.

Labradoodles are actually one of the most popular designer dogs. Both Labrador retrievers and poodles are very popular pet dog breeds. They are both intelligent and love to please their families. In lots of cases, Labradoodles will share similar traits to their parents.

Because poodles shed less than other pet dog breeds, they are often used in these hybrid crosses in an attempt to create a a lot more hypoallergenic pet dog breed. In the case of the Labrador retriever, a notorious shedder, breeders are attempting to create a loving, friendly, intelligent and active pet dog that will have a a lot more curly coat that will shed less.

Although Labradoodles are claimed to be hypoallergenic, this really depends on the individual dog.

Labradoodles were first bred around 1989. considering that then, they have been used as guide dogs and help dogs because they are very gentle and easily trained.

Labradoodle appearance

Labrador retrievers are crossed with either the standard poodle or the miniature poodle to create first generation Labradoodles. some of the puppies from these crosses will have curly coats like the poodle, while others will a lot more closely resemble the Labrador parent. Some puppies will end up with a wiry coat.

Some of the offspring will have a personality that is a lot more like the poodle, while others will have the temperament of a Lab. The truth is, they are crosses and can have the look and personality of either parent or a combination of both.

As far as their coat colors, they can have coats of white, cream, gold, apricot, red, brown, black and other colors that can be seen in poodles. The colors of the pups depend on genetics. Not all the puppies will be the same color just because they are from the same litter or just because their parents are a certain color.

Health of Labradoodles

When breeding Labradoodles and other designer dogs, breeders claim to be trying to produce “hybrid vigor.” Whether or not hybrid vigor actually exists is debatable.

Some people claim that mixed breed dogs are healthier. In reality, a Labradoodle could be complimentary of the genetic conditions that may pester their purebred parents, or not. If both parents suffer from the same genetic condition, chances are that their offspring will suffer from that condition as well.

If you are considering a Labradoodle, or any puppy for that matter, your best bet is to find a responsible breeder who has had the parents checked for genetic conditions before breeding them.

Labradoodles and other designer dogs are very popular ideal now and they can make terrific pets. but no matter what type of pet dog you are considering, the recommendations remains the same – do your research. If you are considering a designer dog, then be sure that both parent pet dog breeds are compatible with your lifestyle because your puppy may have traits from both parents.

And as always, remember, there are lots of terrific dogs, mixed breeds and purebred dogs, who need a loving home.

Now it’s your turn. What do you think about the current trend in designer dogs?

Hackles on a pet dog – What Does it indicate When My Dog’s Hackles Are Up?

Hackles are that strip of hair along a dog’s back. A dog’s hackles can rise in a number of different situations: fear, anxiety, excitement, nervousness or anger.

In the early days after my pet dog Baxter came to live with us, I noticed that when we met other dogs, his hackles went up.

I had always heard that hackles were connected with aggression, but Baxter didn’t seem in any way aggressive. In fact, he was wiggly and ecstatic and friendly any time we encountered other dogs—although he did it with his hair in a Mohawk!

IN THIS POST:

What does “raise your hackles” mean?
Are increased hackles a sign of aggression?
Raised hackles on a puppy
Do cats have hackles?

What does increased hackles mean?

You’ve probably heard the phrase “raise your hackles” and the association with “making someone angry.” However, in the context of dogs, our fitness instructor put my mind at ease.

She compared my dog’s increased hairs on his back to human goosebumps. In checking out Baxter’s body language overall, she said he was just excited. The excitement made his fur stand up.

Alexandra Horowitz in the book inside of a pet dog describes a dog’s increased hackles not as aggression, but a lot more normally as arousal.

“The hair between the shoulders or at the rump—the hackles—may be standing at attention, serving not just as a visual signal of arousal but also releasing the odor of the skin glands at the base of the hairs.”

For dogs, for whom scent is so important, I think the smell component is a really amazing feature of hackles raising.

A dog’s increased fur for communication

It’s crucial to pay attention to your dog’s body language and try to learn what he’s saying if he increases the hair on his back. Your pet dog may be reacting in concern or aggression, so you have to be prepared to manage that situation.

For us, Baxter’s fur will go up often if he hears a noise outside and feels like he needs to be on guard. Usually, he and his Mohawk go running to the dining room window and survey the farm until he’s sure there’s no danger—and then his hair relaxes again.

Are increased hackles always a sign of aggression?

No, a dog’s increased hackles does not always indicate aggression, although it can.

A dog’s increased hair on his back are an example of why it’s crucial to look at body language as a whole, and not just one particular part of your dog.

Horowitz says, “For dogs, posture can announce aggressive intent or diminishing modesty. To simply stand erect, at full height, with head and ears up, is to announce readiness to engage, and maybe to be the prime mover in the engagement.”

When meeting other dogs, while Baxter’s fur may be up, his tail is wagging so fast his entire back end is wiggling. In checking out his ears, his face, his overall posture, I can normally examine how he feels about a particular situation.

I can also learn what Baxter is saying by checking out the other dogs around him. They aren’t hesitant to meet him or aggressive towards him. They normally return his friendliness and sniff enthusiastically.

As adapted as dogs and humans are to live together, we still communicate very differently. Figuring out what he’s feeling and thinking is a fascinating process. and it’s crucial to not make assumptions based on what we think we know. I love working on strengthening my understanding of my dog.

Raised hackles on a puppy

Some puppies may raise their hackles, for the same reasons as adult dogs. considering that puppies are still figuring out their place in the world, they may be a bit a lot more dramatic as new things are a lot more likely to make them ecstatic or nervous.

Lindsay, the main blogger behind That Mutt, noticed her puppy Remy would raise his hackles whenever they went to his puppy obedience class. The fitness instructor would even comment about his mohawk, but Remy never showed any aggression. It was pure excitement and probably some anxiety.

Do cats have hackles?

Yes, cats absolutely raise their hackles when they are upset, stressed, ecstatic or scared. I’m sure you’ve seen a cat standing with its fur all puffed up. The cat was probably hissing or growling.

A lot of animals have “hackles” along their neck and back that will raise when the animal is on alert, ecstatic or nervous.

Do you notice your pet dog raise her hair on her back? When?

I understand people get all bent out of shape over anything that suggests “pack theory” in dog training such as eating before your dog.

But I really did eat before my dog for rather a long time after I embraced him.

No, this rule wasn’t necessary, however you understand what it did? It assisted me preserve a consistent routine for my young, rowdy dog, which is what he needed most.

I don’t believe a dog will truly keep in mind (or care) who eats first. What really matters is that he learns to comply with whatever policies his household establishes as well as that he gets rewarded for it.

What policies do you set for your dog regarding mealtimes? let me understand in the comments.

Here are the two policies I set for my dog:

Rule #1: I provide my dog with some kind of “work” before he eats.

I prefer to feed my dog right after his morning as well as evening walks so he’s had to “work” for his food.

All dogs are working dogs at heart as well as mine is no exception. Ace thrives if he’s provided consistent expectations as well as challenges.

When he was younger as well as more energetic, his work was to go on a long run with me every morning. now that he’s older as well as our walks are shorter, I bring along a couple of treats as well as we utilize the time to method techniques or obedience commands.

I’ve been utilizing Plato’s Turkey as well as Cranberry EOS treats. I put 3 or 4 in my pocket, as well as I can either break them into bit pieces or provide them to my dog whole.

Rule #2: I don’t allow whining or begging while I eat.

I taught my dog to lie quietly on his dog bed during my meals. I don’t even care if he stares at me from across the room; I just don’t want him in my deal with or whining.

[quote_center]Sometimes I eat first. sometimes he eats first. It doesn’t truly matter …[/quote_center]

This teaches my dog self-control, regardless of who eats first. sometimes I eat first. sometimes he eats first. It doesn’t truly matter, however I can’t have him hovering as well as flinging drool everywhere. Gross.

How many of you are holding a Thanksgiving dinner or traveling somewhere with your dog this month?

If you requirement to keep your dog calm as well as peaceful during a holiday meal (or during any type of gathering), a great choice is to stuff some treats into a Kong or other toy.

The EOS from Plato Pet treats are soft, making them perfect for stuffing into any type of type of puzzle toy.

I keep in mind one year we had my husband’s mom visiting for Thanksgiving as well as Ace would NOT stop whining during our meal! (So annoying.)

Best pet discolor as well as odor cleaner

[frame src=”http://www.thatmutt.com/web/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Ace-with-pet-odor-remover.jpg” target=”_self” width=”613″ height=”402″ alt=”Pet discolor as well as odor remover” align=”center” prettyphoto=”false”]

Naturally based active component enzyme cleaner guaranteed to permanently remove pet stains

Note: This is a sponsored post. checked out more to discover exactly how you can save 25% on a bottle of natural pet odor cleaner as well as a black light flashlight from Oliver Rocket Pet products (aff links). coupon Code below.

I’ve been looking for a good, natural pet discolor cleaner for a couple of reasons.

First of all, my pets are gross (obviously).

I have a 70-pound lab mix as well as two cats, and since of them my rugs have been with a lot.

If the cats aren’t puking up hairballs, Ace is flinging drool everywhere, tracking in sand or vomiting up the water he just chugged.

But other than the truth that my pets are disgusting, I likewise wished to try a natural pet discolor remover because I’m allergic to the chemicals found in most cleaning products. For that reason, I usually just clean with white vinegar as well as water, which works OK.

More about Oliver Rocket’s pet discolor & odor remover

Oliver Rocket Pet products sent me a bottle of its pet discolor as well as odor cleaner to try.

The product can be utilized on carpet as well as upholstery, as a detergent for carpet-cleaning machines as well as as a detergent in a mop container for difficult floors, according to the company. It is designed to eliminate both spots as well as odors, although I only utilized it for eliminating stains.

According to Oliver Rocket Pet Products, the cleaner works by getting to the root of the difficulty area for a “deep, long-term clean.”

Here’s a diagram to show exactly how it works:

To eliminate a stain, you just shake the bottle well as well as then pour a generous amount directly to the stain, according to the directions. The disc nozzle supposedly assists the cleaner reach deep into the carpet pad (vs. a spray bottle, that only gets the surface). Next, you work it into a lather with a fabric or paper towel.

I let the product sit for about five minutes on the stain, and then I soaked it up with paper towels. You may requirement to go with the process a couple of times for additional nasty spots as well as odors.

According to Oliver Rocket Pet Products:

1. The product is made in the United States.

2. It’s made from naturally based active ingredients.

3. It features a disc cap instead of a spray nozzle for more efficient deep cleaning.

4. The odor cleaner is made with high-end ingredients.

5. It is non-toxic, risk-free for the atmosphere as well as risk-free around youngsters as well as pets.

[quote_center]”It is non-toxic, risk-free for the atmosphere as well as risk-free around youngsters as well as pets.”[/quote_center]

What I believe about the pet stain remover

The discolor cleaner truly made a difference for cleaning up after my cats, which was my primary concern. It was truly simple to utilize as well as only took about five minutes to clean up the old stains. I extremely suggest the product to other pet owners.

I likewise appreciate that the product does not have a strong fragrance or a strong chemical smell. It does have a moderate scent, however most people most likely want cleaning products to have a slight scent.

You may keep in mind the black light flashlight for pet spots I reviewed previously from Oliver Rocket. When paired together, the flashlight as well as the odor remover can assist you get rid of those gross pet spots for good.

The blacklight flashlight assisted me discover numerous old stains from my cats that I couldn’t see otherwise. I then utilized the discolor cleaner directly on those spots. There are still a couple of tough spots I haven’t been able to totally remove, however I can only see those with the black light.

What’s not so good

The only thing I don’t like about the odor remover is that the components are not listed on the label. This doesn’t bother me as well much since I trust the business when it states the product is non-toxic as well as risk-free for utilize around youngsters as well as pets.

I requested the specifics on the components for the benefit of this review, as well as the business was able to provide a general concept of the ingredients, which include:

Benefits of a raw diet plan for cats

Most healthy cats will benefit from a raw diet. right here are 7 benefits:

1. Cats are true carnivores

There’s no question about it; cats are carnivores designed to eat MEAT!

Eating raw food is the natural method for your feline to eat!

Cats do not requirement all the carbohydrates discovered in many dry pet foods. Their digestive systems are not designed to process high amounts of grains, as well as they do finest with a high-protein diet.

This is since raw food is fresh, whole as well as unprocessed. It’s the natural method a feline would eat in the wild. Raw food contains online enzymes important for digestion as well as taking in nutrients.

Eating raw meat will make your feline happy since he is designed to eat whole animals like mice.

2. A raw diet plan provides more wetness for cats.

Cats depend upon getting most of their water from their food.

The issue is, many feline owners feed their cats dry feline food which is obviously lacking in moisture. If a feline doesn’t get sufficient water, it can lead to kidney as well as bladder issues down the road.

I did not understand exactly how important it was to feed my cats a high-moisture food. For most of their lives, mine ate dry food. Unfortunately, my feline Beamer died from kidney illness in 2018 as well as my other feline Scout has kidney illness now.

My cats’ diet plan did not necessarily cause them to get kidney disease. I will never understand for sure. However, I believe it played a role. I plan to offer my future cats a raw or canned diet.

See my post: Raw food for cats with kidney disease.

3. much better general health

I believe a raw diet plan is the healthiest choice for most cats. people who feed their cats a raw diet plan frequently report their cats have:

healthier coats
less poop!
healthier teeth
less shedding (fewer hairballs!)
more energy and
fewer allergies

And while you can’t manage everything, feeding your feline a high-quality, balanced raw diet plan should ideally mean less general gos to to the vet. Ideally, this will end up saving you money on vet expenses over time.

The raw feline food from our sponsor, Darwin’s, is 100% genuine meat (chicken, turkey, or lamb) as well as contains no animal by-products or fillers! The food is grain free, as well as all of the turkey, chicken, as well as lamb in the meals are pasture-raised as well as free-roaming (cage free). The food contains no antibiotics, steroids or artificial hormones.

4. Raw food to assist a feline lose weight

Cats do not requirement all the carbohydrates discovered in most industrial dry foods. They requirement genuine protein, not corn as well as inexpensive rice by-products.

When you feed your feline a raw diet plan high in protein, it’s easier to assist him maintain a healthy weight. Raw feeders are likewise less likely to “free feed” their cats. Instead, they’re more likely to feed fixed amounts twice per day.

Unfortunately, many indoor cats in specific are extremely overweight in the United States.

We all understand that obesity is linked to all kind of health and wellness problems whether you’re a feline or a dog or a person. It doesn’t take a veterinarian to figure out that fit, lean cats are generally healthier as well as more likely to online longer.

5. Raw food for cats is affordable compared to feeding a huge dog.

Let’s deal with it, expense is one of the reasons more pet owners do not feed raw diets. It’s generally more costly to feed healthy, fresh food.

I hear about this barrier every time I compose about raw feeding, as well as I totally understand.

At least with cats (and little dogs) you’re not buying as much food since they just don’t eat as much!

Yes, feeding your feline a raw diet plan is more costly than feeding dry food, however it’s not as significantly higher like it is for, say, an 80-pound Lab.

There are many raw feline food brands to select from such as Darwin’s (or you can make your own!).

See my post: affordable raw pet food

6. less poop in the litter box!

The reason for this is since a natural raw diet plan will provide your feline with all the nutrients he needs rather than fill him up with unnecessary, inexpensive components like corn. That means less waste. A great deal less.

7. Cats have been eating raw food ever since cats existed!

Commercial dry feline food is a relatively new idea. before “kibble” was invented, cats thrived on genuine food.

Which brings me as well …

Will a feline get ill from raw food?

No, cats generally won’t get ill from eating fresh raw meat since they are carnivores. They’re extremely unlikely to get ill from fresh raw meat from a raw feline food business such as Darwin’s.

Like dogs, cats have extremely acidic stomachs as well as short digestive tracts. This avoids bacteria from colonizing.

If your feline has been eating a dry or canned food his whole life, it would be a great concept to shift him to raw by slowly integrating the two foods.

This isn’t since your feline will get ill from bacteria in the raw meat. It’s since your feline may get an upset stomach from different food in general. similar to if you were to switch your feline from one dry food brand to another.

Of course, if your feline is out catching as well as killing mice or birds, there is a possibility he might pick up worms/parasites from eating these wild animals. If your feline goes outdoors, you may requirement to provide him a de-wormer every few months (ask your cat’s vet about this).

Cats eat mice, rabbits as well as birds in the wild

My hubby likes to tell the story about a time when he as well as some buddies were grilling burgers on the patio.

Our big, orange feline Beamer suddenly squeezed himself with the slats of the fence, bring a freshly killed rabbit across the yard. He then proceeded to drag the rabbit onto the patio as well as location it a few feet from the grill!

Apparently, Beamer decided he would join the celebration as well, BYOB style.

That’s Bring Your own Bunny.

Beamer ate the entire (raw) bunny – the eyes, the brain, the bones, the intestines, the heart, the kidneys, you name it. as well as then he relaxed on the deck in the sun, full as well as happy as well as purring.

When our dogs as well as cats online mainly indoors, we fail to remember they are animals, hunters as well as carnivores.

How to shift your feline to a raw diet

You can shift your feline from his dry or canned food to raw food slowly by mixing the two over a couple of weeks. Or, you can just switch your feline over to the new diet plan right away. There are pros as well as cons to both.

Slowly changing your feline to a raw diet

The benefit of this is you’ll slowly assist your feline change to the new food without upsetting his stomach. as well as since some cats are picky eaters as well as don’t like change, a sluggish shift may assist your feline change better.

Most raw pet food business such as Darwin’s suggest a sluggish shift where you add a few bits of the new food into your cat’s old food. perhaps about 25% new food as well as 75% old food for a few days.

If all goes well, you can do 50/50 for a few days as well as then 75/25 up until you’re at 100% raw food after about 10 days total.

For more details, see this post: exactly how to shift my pet to a raw diet

What to do if your feline is not thinking about raw food

My feline Scout is extremely picky as well as with him I would just slowly mix in bits of his raw food with his canned or dry food. He believes dry food is a treat so it assists to mix that in with his raw food. Not ideal, however with picky cats you have to get creative!

If your feline likes the structure of dry food, you can sprinkle some over the raw food. He may likewise like some dehydrated raw food.

Darwin’s suggests staying with a consistent feeding routine to your feline understands to expect food at specific times of the day as well as will develop up an appetite. This is likewise true since you don’t want to leave raw meals out all day.
