Are these in your home? prevent a pet poisoning

Last Wednesday, while on my lunch break, I noticed that I had missed several calls from my pal Colin. He had left messages about the urgency of his situation and that I needed to get in touch with him immediately. When I called him back he asked me if we carried something called vitamin K here at 1800PetMeds. apparently Colin was concerned that his cat may have ingested some rat poison and wanted to treat the cat without proper veterinary guidance after doing some “internet research.”

Since vitamin K is the clotting ingredient that gets disrupted when an animal has ingested an anticoagulant, he felt that simply giving this medication would be the answer. since we don’t carry vitamin K and treating a cat poisoning at home is never recommended, I strongly suggested that he right away take his cat to the veterinarian. When Colin noticed that his cat had stopped eating and drinking, became weak, had pale gums, and was having difficulty breathing he realized that he needed to take the cat in for a checkup. It was lucky that he went in when he did, because the cat not only needed to get a vitamin K injection but he also needed intravenous fluids and a blood transfusion. had he not taken the cat to receive the proper treatment, this poisoning would have most likely been fatal.

Some medications such as anticoagulants can be dangerous even in small doses, and in fact, almost anything can become poisonous if the wrong dose is given. A dose as small as the tip of a needle of certain medications and chemicals can be enough to cause serious harm or even death to a cat or a dog. even medications like common vitamins that are normally safe under most circumstances could become dangerous if given in overdose quantities.

Following are some examples of human and animal medications that are frequently found in many homes that can be extremely dangerous. keep in mind that this is not a complete list, but a sample of some common culprits that quickly come to mind:

Acetaminophen (Tylenol): a medication used for pain in humans is extremely dangerous even in small quantities in certain animals.

Fluoxetine (Prozac): a common drug for depression or for obsessive disorder can be hazardous if not given properly.

Acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin): one of the oldest known anti-inflammatory medications used for pain can be toxic in both dogs and cats even in small doses.

Diphenhydramine (Benadryl): a frequently used anti-allergy medicine can be hazardous if not used properly.

Digoxin: this drug commonly used for heart failure and heart disease has a very narrow range of safety and must be given exactly as prescribed, or it could be dangerous.

Methylphenidate (Ritalin) and Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed): both central nervous system stimulants can be dangerous if given incorrectly or to the wrong animal.

Diabetes medications: another class of drugs that can be very dangerous in the wrong dose are the ones used for diabetes. If blood sugar is lowered too quickly with insulin or with an oral medication, hypoglycemia can result and become potentially life-threatening. Insulin dose can be measured incorrectly if the wrong syringe is used. U-40 insulin should be drawn up with U-40 syringes and U-100 insulin with U-100 syringes.  Make sure you know which syringe to use, and don’t hesitate to ask your pharmacist if you’re not sure which one to use.

Today’s topic is accidental poisoning. Sometimes, such as in the situation that Colin was facing, a cat or dog can get into something even with the best intentions and efforts of the owner. In cases like this, the best thing is for the owner to know how to react to this emergency. Today I will continue to briefly describe poisoning with anticoagulants such as those found in rat poisons and how best way to handle those.

If you actually see the cat or dog ingest the rat poison, it may be possible for the veterinarian to induce vomiting or get it bound up with activated charcoal. usually if caught within a few hours, vomiting can help and activated charcoal can be useful for about ten or twelve hours after the initial ingestion. If you only notice the symptoms such as bleeding gums, the veterinarian may want to administer coagulation factors and replace any lost fluids. Either way, if you suspect or see this type of poisoning, do not try to deal with the situation yourself. If you can’t get to an emergency veterinarian then at the very least call pet poison control at 888-426-4435 or 800-213-6680.

Since most cases of anticoagulant toxicity are preventable, the best thing is to be alert as to where the poison is in the home, and keep the pets away from that area; proper storage is imperative. pets should not be outside unsupervised, especially if you know that neighbors or others are potentially usingpoisons around their property. preventing accidental poisonings from medicine is mostly a matter of placing all your medication someplace safe–from both pets and children.

Another way to prevent toxicity is to make sure nobody gives your pet any medication without checking with you first. That being said, it is important to know what your pet can and cannot take. Last but not least, if your pet gets into something such as rat poison, for the health of your companion it’s important to take him or her right away to the veterinarian so treatment can begin immediately. In cases of poisoning, the veterinarian may be able to do some things early that may not be available as options later on after the poison has completely absorbed and damage has already occurred.

As always, if you have any other medication related questions, a 1800PetMeds pharmacist is available to help answer those for you.

Know when you should be concerned about your cat’s runny eyes

AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterTwitterShare to PinterestPinterestPinterestShare to MoreAddThisMore3

Large and luminous, the eyes are one of the most beautiful and distinctive features of the cat, but the eyes can sometimes be marred by a watery or “goopy” eye discharge, which can become chronic. There are many possible causes for the development of chronic eye discharge in cats. As with any changes in the eyes in our animal companions, any chronic change in appearance should be evaluated by a veterinarian for proper diagnostic assessment and treatment.

An important initial step is to evaluate the color and consistently of the discharge as well as whether there are other changes in the eyes, such as light sensitivity, redness, and swelling, and whether the problem involves one or both eyes. especially with cats, it is important to evaluate closely whether there are other upper respiratory symptom changes, including sneezing, nasal congestion, discharge as many infectious causes of respiratory diseases in cats will cause potential eye inflammation and discharge as well.

While traumatic injuries to the eye typically cause more acute or short-term sudden inflammation and discharge, many viral infections of cats including feline herpes virus (i.e. rhinotracheitis) and less commonly feline calicivirus are involved with more chronic respiratory and eye diseases in cats. Bacterial infections, including chlamydia, also may be involved in eye disease, which is especially important be aware of, as chlamydia is also a potential contagious disease transmitted to people as well (although the risk is low because the feline version, which is a different strain than that affecting humans, is highly adapted to cats). It is for these reasons that any cat with chronic eye discharges and/or upper respiratory symptoms have a thorough veterinary exam to assess for these underlying potential infectious diseases.

Certainly chronic airborne allergies to inhalant allergens, including molds, grasses, trees, dander and house dust, also may cause chronic eye discharges in some cats. On rare occasion, foreign bodies can lodge in the conjunctival sacs of the eyes, leading also to chronic disease of the eye. Finally, certain breeds, including Persian cats, will have more of a tendency to have chronic eye discharges, because of the anatomic shape of the head in these breeds.  In summary, a veterinary evaluation and full exam is necessary, especially when there is a risk for scratching or ulcers of the cornea with some of these infectious diseases.

Leo Potato

AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterTwitterShare to PinterestPinterestPinterestShare to MoreAddThisMore

Potato (Leo) is in the bottom left corner with the beige collar.

So much thought goes into deciding on a name for your dog. So. Much. Erich and I went back and forth for weeks before sticking with Leo. After he was born, before we brought him home, we started calling him Potato because that’s exactly what he looked like: a little potato with legs and a tail. since then, Potato has stuck as his “middle” name. He’ll even respond when we call “Leo Potato”.

Before Potato was officially Leo, we had trouble on agreeing on a name. Erich had named one of his childhood Golden’s, Zeus, and wanted to continue the theme and name our dog, Thor. We also thought about naming him Wrigley, after the famous Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs.

I thought of Leo and fell in love with the name (and Leonardo DiCaprio has been my celebrity crush since The Titanic came out). We came up with a compromise: if Potato had massive paws and looked like he would be a big boy, we would name him Thor, and if he looked like he would be a smaller Golden, we would go with Leo.

Well, before we could even tell whether Potato would be a bulky or petite dog, I successfully convinced Erich to agree on Leo. The next day I came home with an engraved silver dog tag to seal the deal.

Some people oppose the idea of killing dogs because they think it’s horrible. We’re not here advise you on what to do in the face of a difficult decision. we are just here to help pet owners who require the precise information, ” how-to euthanize a dog with Benadryl at home. “

You might be faced with difficult choices in your life. When you are ready to have to say goodbye to your pet beloved pet for the last time, it’s more difficult to manage the emotions. However, as a lover of pets you need to create these solutions that are perfect for your pet.

Euthanize a dog with Benadryl

As the pet’s owner I understand your emotions and feelings. Therefore, in order to simplify the process and make it more efficient, I researched every aspect of the requirements and facts to help you.

Combating a terminal illness, or aggressive pet, together with the loss of a beloved pet isn’t easy. The majority of pet owners must take care of their pets and allow them to live in peace, comfort and affection over the last few days.

Euthanasia can be costly when done by a vet. Also, many believe that pets would be scared and uncomfortable when they’re away from their families in the final moments. This is why some pet owners prefer to do it at home, with love and comfort.

Can I put my dog to death? dog using Benadryl?

Benadryl, an antihistamine is a medication that can be administered three times per day at 1 mg/kg bodyweight. Three times is considered euthanasia. You can also take Tylenol or insulin to treat an overdose and then put patients in a state of coma, so that they do not wake and relapse.

It is, however, the vital to consider what might occur to Benadryl. This allows you to decide on what and when you want to follow.

It’s the sole commercial chance for their dogs and the owners as well as an acceptable way to spend near the close of lives for a lot of people. It can be your own private and quiet moment or create an event that is ritual for example, the alarm that commemorates your life.

You can light a small candles, offer an oath, decorated with flowers, toys of your choice or other toys. It’s your choice!

We do not encourage people to put down their pets. This is a procedure for medical reasons. All medications, regardless of whether they are available that sold over the counter, should have a discussion with your vet prior to giving it to a pet.

1. Evaluation prior to Dosage

Before you apply Benadryl to the pet, make sure you examine the product using the use of a small amount on your dog , and examine for signs of a reaction. If you can confirm that there aren’t any side reactions to the medication then you are able with the full dosage.

It is possible to give something delicious to ensure that your pet does not even notice that it’s a medication. However, make sure to break it down into smaller pieces.

3. Mix the Benadryl liquid and wet food items.

It is also possible to give your pet Benadryl gel by mixing it with an entree which contains liquid food. Your pet must enjoy the food without regard to the medication.

You could also place the dropper inside your dog’s mouth , and then press the medication into the mouth of your dog. You can then give the gift you want for your dog. This will help him skip all other things.

4. Precaution While applying Benadryl

Begin to live your pet’s life with you at home isn’t an optimal choice. If you’re looking to do this, you need make sure to take a larger dose over the normal lethal dose in order to avoid errors.

Check that your plans are placed in the proper place. Remember that a weak animal loses control of its bladder and intestines. Therefore, be cautious about where you put it.

If you decide to assign your dog the light be sure that you’ve got everything you require to avoid a mistake and ensure that it is under control. Take note of what your brain says. There are many people who don’t like the way you approach things.

But, it’s not lawful regardless of where you live. It’s not an issue for anyone and you could easily upset your pet if you wish. Be prepared for an explosive attack.

If you treat to your pet a fatal dose, you’ll be shocked and irritated. It’s quite normal, in the sense that you don’t kill animals just to live and you could never have thought of that you’d be a part of the world of your best pal in the near future or not.

Do not forget to help your pal pass away with dignity. It’s possible that it will be trauma for you. However, everything will be different in how they manage. Some people are happy and not sad.

The vet may overdose the medicineBenadryl that will send your pet to sleep indefinitely for a few minutes or seconds, based on the severity. The vet will employ the stethoscope in order to determine if your dog’s heart is not functioning, and confirms the end of life.

There could be reactions like abdominal cramps, urinary movements and urination even after confirmation of the diagnosis of death. This can be normal and don’t worry about it.

Following the successful completion of this procedure will be able to spend a few additional minutes, and if would like, your pet can get some time. In accordance with how easy it isfor your pet, this procedure is able to be completed at your home or by a veterinarian.

What is Euthanasia?

It is an approach by which you can kill your pet quickly and easily. The choice of this strategy is evident because nobody wants to witness the pain of their beloved pets.

It is possible to do this at home, or talk to a veterinarian. Most individuals prefer to complete the procedure at home, so that they can be able to say goodbye and spend the last moments with loved ones in a comfortable and familiar location.

In this scenario the veterinarian at home is able to intervene and euthanize animals, in the company of beloved ones , and not in a state of tension. It is your responsibility to choose according to your own personal preference since euthanasia in your home is costly and requires travel.

Dogs are aggressive and violent:

You can kill a dog which is found to be aggressive and may bite people or relatives. In such a case the dog’s owner or judge can decide on the cause of violence.

However, it is vital to examine the behavior of the animal before the decision to kill is made. This research seeks to discover the root of the violence and to determine the extent to which it is temporary or permanent.

Dog Shelters:

Unfortunately, dogs who cannot locate their owner or get lost during the overcrowding of shelters are usually killed. Be more thoughtful before you let your dog down!

If you’re not sure you want them to be around, just wait some time days to find a trustworthy pet owner. Euthanize isn’t one of numerous options. The decision is made according to the advice of the veterinarian and has to be endorsed by the dog’s owner in the event of a court ruling.

Be careful! If you are in this situation, there are other optionsare available, including adoption by a pet lover or even putting the pet in a house.

Small dog’s possessiveness of owner

I typically hear people ask, “How to stop my small dog from guarding me?” however huge dogs will likewise guard their owners.

With small dogs, the scenario goes something like this:

First, the dog barks as well as growls whenever people come to the door.

Next, the dog’s owner picks him up to stop him from barking or growling.

From his owner’s arms, the dog continues to growl at anyone who tries to get too close. He might not even “allow” anyone else to sit on the couch next to his owner.

Sound familiar?

Tips to stop a small dog’s possessiveness of his owner

If your medium or big dog is showing possessiveness, these rules will likewise apply!

How to stop my dog from resource guarding me

1. understand the problem – Why does my dog guard me?

If a small dog is guarding his owner, he is typically acting aggressive since of an insecurity.

The dog’s owner has been carrying him around for months, shielding him from experiencing the world as a dog. Whenever the dog is frightened, the owner picks him up.

Although the owner is trying to protect her dog, the dog never learns exactly how to offer with the real world. He never learns exactly how to cope with new environments, other dogs approaching him, kids reaching for him, etc.

Naturally, the dog feels safe (and therefore more powerful) when he’s in his owner’s arms. He wants to maintain that feeling of power, so he learns to growl at anyone who comes too close.

When he growls, people move away. The dog learns that growling protects his “power source.”

Often, if the owner would simply set the dog on the ground as well as ignore him, the dog’s state of mind would quickly change. more repetitions of that as well as ultimately the dog no longer growls.

2. dedicate to solving your dog’s guarding

It’s typically difficult for dog owners to realize they themselves are the problem.

What to do if your dog is protective of you?

If you can dedicate to making modification in your own behavior, you can assist your dog. I understand it’s not always easy, so hang in there!

Are you ok with setting your dog on the ground when he’s scared? Are you ok with ignoring him? using a firm voice? setting clear rules as well as boundaries?

If you are willing to make changes, you will be able to assist your dog overcome his possessiveness over time. If you can’t change, then it will not be possible for your dog to change.

Keep reading for more ideas on what to do if your dog is protective of you.

3. Do not hold the dog when he’s growling

When you hold your dog, you enable him to ended up being more powerful.

Obviously we love lap dogs, as well as it’s not a poor thing to hold as well as cuddle them. That’s one of the reasons we love dogs!

However, we should not hold or cuddle our dogs when they are acting insecure or aggressive. Doing so encourages the wrong behavior. If you hold a dog when he’s growling, he is not discovering a more appropriate behavior. He thinks the barking is ok when it’s not.

I’m not saying you can’t provide comfort to a frightened dog, however when the fear is resulting in aggression we need to look for other ways to offer comfort vs. picking the dog up.

See my post: Can you reward a dog’s fear?

4. block your dog from guarding you

If you set your dog on the ground, he might sit at your feet as well as guard you from there. Or, he might keep trying to jump back onto the couch or onto your lap where he feels more powerful.

Don’t enable this.

If he jumps onto your lap, set him back on the ground. If he tries to jump on the couch, block him with your arm or leg. push him off if needed. If he sits at your feet, put his leash on him as well as tether him to a chair across the room. Or, if he keeps hiding behind your legs at the dog park, keep moving away.

The dog needs to discover exactly how to cope without you.

When placed on the ground, the dog will most likely stop growling as well as barking. Instead, his true stress and anxiety will show. He might pace as well as whine, frantically trying to get back to his “power source” – your lap!

This is when you should simply ignore your dog. Don’t think about him. Don’t touch him. Don’t even glimpse in his direction. Act as though he is not there. as well as don’t feel poor about it.

You are helping him ended up being a more confident, normal dog. When he’s calm as well as quiet, that’s when you should pet him as well as even invite him back to sit with you.

5. Don’t enable your dog on the furniture (temporarily)

If your dog has a habit of guarding you, I recommend a no dogs on the furniture rule, at least temporarily.

This rule seems very difficult for the owners of small dogs to enforce, however it’s important. (My dogs are never allowed on the furniture as well as they are just fine!)

See our post: stop my dog from growling at me on the bed

Often, the furniture itself is what triggers the possessiveness. The dog may not enable strangers to sit on the couch, for example.

If that’s the case, the owner should not enable the dog on the couch at all. The human decides who sits on the couch. The dog does not get to decide.

The dog might even growl at someone who sleeps in his owner’s bed! Again, the human should be the one to choose who sleeps on the bed. The dog does not get to decide!

Enforcing a no dogs on the furniture rule will likewise teach your dog a higher level of self control. This is important overall since a dog with more self control is generally going to be more obedient, balanced as well as happy.

6. Do not enable possessiveness of food or toys

Dogs that are possessive of their owners are typically possessive of food as well as toys as well. This is habits that you should not tolerate from your dog.

To stop a dog’s possessiveness of food as well as toys, it’s important to  teach the dog a command for “drop” or “leave it.” It’s likewise important to comply with consistent rules, as well as to teach your dog that whatever belongs to you – even “his” toys, food as well as bed.

7. practice solid obedience skills

Dogs with solid obedience skills are generally more respectful of their owners. They listen to commands, as well as they have a high level of self control.

It’s not a coincidence that small dogs are less likely to be trained as well as more likely to be possessive compared to larger dogs.

It’s never too late to start training your dog, though. I extremely recommend you start taking your dog to group obedience classes. It’s important for the dogs to discover self control while working around other dogs.

8. teach your dog it’s ok to be alone

Sometimes a small dog feels the need to guard his owner since he is not comfortable being alone. He barks as well as growls at anyone who comes near since that person might be trying to remove him from the owner.

You have the capability to modification your dog’s habits by helping him cope without you. It’s not healthy for a dog to be near his owner 24/7 just as it’s not healthy for any type of two people to be together all the time!

So, provide your dog some time each day in his kennel or in a separate room. You can provide him a special treat during this time like a Kong toy with peanut butter. If the dog whines, it’s very important to ignore him until he’s quiet.

Another way to produce separation is to tether his leash to a chair as well as sit on the other side of the room, ignoring him for 20 minutes.

You should likewise work on teaching him a solid down/stay command until he will lie on a dog bed or mat for up to a half-hour.

See: exactly how to teach the place command.

9. assist your dog bond with people other than you

Ask pals as well as household members to feed your dog, take him for walks as well as play with him from time to time. This will assist your dog see that other people are good, too!

And here’s a fantastic training exercise recommended by a reader named Marie:

Tie your dog’s leash to a chair as well as sit on the chair. Then, ask different people to approach you as well as your dog. The second your dog barks or growls, get up as wellas walk away without saying a word. This will teach your dog that barking as well as growling will not assist his situation. It will really make you go away!

Sounds like a fantastic concept to me!

10. Reward great behavior

It’s important that we praise our dogs when they are showing great behavior. If your dog is sitting calmly on the floor while guests are over, make sure to pet him as well as tell him he’s a great boy. Or toss him a treat.

If he sits patiently while you pet one more dog, tell him what a great dog he is.

We want to ignore unwanted habits as well as reward the good. I recommend the treats called wellness Well Bites.

Signs your dog is protective of you

Finally, I quickly wanted to listing out some signs that your dog is protective of you since it’s not always simple to tell.

Signs your dog is guarding you:

(These can likewise be signs your dog is scared, which is typically the real reason the dog is protecting you. She’s frightened!)

Growls or barks when other people approach you
Places herself between you as well as one more person
Backs into you or sits on your feet or at your feet

Is my dog protecting me or scared?

Often, both! The top reason dogs “protect” their owners is since they are scared. Their owner is the one thing that helps them feel secure as well as safe, so they want to “protect” this “power source.”

The best thing you can do is assist develop your dog’s confidence as well as security using some of the tips outlined above.

What are some other tips you’ve used to prevent a dog’s territorial behavior?

Daisy reflects on national Pet Memorial Day

AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterTwitterShare to PinterestPinterestPinterestShare to MoreAddThisMore1

Today I am feeling a little bit melancholy. That’s because yesterday was national Pet Memorial Day, which is observed on the second Sunday of September. This is a special day to honor and remember all the wonderful cats and dogs who came before.

This is my sister, Pixie. She had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and went to the Rainbow Bridge in 2008. She was a Devon Rex cat, just like me. I tried to play with her a lot, but she never wanted to play. I miss her very much. I liked Pixie because she never tried to ruin my good Times (unlike my brother Harley).

This is a special urn where Pixie is now. Only, I know she’s not really inside there, on account of I tried to tap on the urn and I couldn’t hear anything. I think that now Pixie lives inside my own heart, keeping me company.

Sometimes I feel sad, but then I bring back some of the memories of Pixie and I feel better. When one of our furry pals leaves us, it is okay to feel sad for a little while. but remember that they would not want us to feel sad for long. We are meant to laugh, love, play and have fun. and eat treats. lots and lots of treats.

Keeping a special urn like this can be comforting. I like to keep Pixie’s urn close by, to keep it safe. Some other ways you can remember your dog or cat is by making a scrapbook, framing a special photo, or writing a poem about your four-legged friend. You can even plant a shady tree and place a pretty marker underneath.

Most importantly, always remember the good times you shared with your friend. Adopting another cat or dog that doesn’t have a home is a great tribute to the One who Came Before. I know when I am gone, I want another cat to benefit from all of the toys, treats and love in my home (sorry, Harley is part of the deal too).
